Electing to bowl first, South African bowlers wrecked havoc over their West Indies counterpart in match 12 of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 at Grace Road, Leicester. It was some exemplary bowling from Marizanne Kapp that downed West Indies for mere 48 runs (the sixth-lowest in Women’s World Cup). She and skipper Dane van Niekerk picked up 4 wickets (van Niekerk got 4 for 0, the cheapest 4-wicket haul in international cricket across genders and formats) each while Shabnim Ismail chipped in with 2. In reply, Laura Wolvaardt and Lizelle Lee ransacked West Indies’ humble bowling to reach their target of 49 runs in just 6.2 overs, gifting their side a 10-wicket win.
West Indies, put in by Dane, were in tatters from the start of their innings with Shabnim and Marizanne exhibiting some exceptional demonstration of swing bowling. Hayley Matthews was found napping against Shabnim’s in-swinging delivery that found a faint edge to the ’keeper. Her second wicket was even more devastating as Stafanie Taylor was left admiring her uprooted stumps after getting bowled for 4.
Marizanne joined in the fun, grabbing Reniece Boyce for 4. This time an outswinger did the trick. Trying to play across the line, Reniece managed to hand Marizanne a simple caught and bowled. Kyshona Knight was trapped leg-before first ball. And Deandra Dottin fell to a full-length in-swinging Waqar Younis-esque yorker by Marizanne, third ball. Her leg-stump was knocked out.
It was all Dane from this point. She picked up 4 wickets without conceding a single run. Her first victim was Merissa Aguilleira, who stayed in the middle for 38 balls for a painstaking 3. She went for a sweep, had left her leg-stump exposed, and was bowled. Shane Daley top-edged a sweep. Chedean Nation hit one straight to mid-wicket. And Qiana Joseph missed a slog-sweep and was trapped leg-before.
In between all this Marizanne bowled Afy Fletcher, rooted to the crease. She achieved a career-best haul of 4 for 21. Chedean, with 26, was the only one to put up some resistance.
Chasing a modest 49 runs, Lizelle and Laura wasted no time in the middle and launched into an all-out attack. Lizelle in particular blasted herself to a 16-ball 29, while Laura added 19 off 22.
Brief scores:
West Indies Women 48 in 25.2 overs (Chedean Nation 26, Hayley Matthews 4; Dane van Niekerk 4 for 0) lost to South Africa Women 49 for 0 in 6.2 overs (Laura Wolvaardt 19*, Lizelle Lee 29*; Deandra Dottin 0 for 23) by 10 wickets with 262 balls to spare.
Player of the Match: Marizanne Kapp.
