India Women bagged third consecutive victory as they defeat Ireland Women in Match No. 11 of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2017 on Friday. India Women had defeated Sri Lanka Women in their first and followed it up with a victory over Thailand in their second. Batting first, India put up a challenging total of 250 for the loss of a mere 2 wickets at the end of their innings. Chasing the target, Ireland went on losing wickets and ended their innings with just 124 runs on the board, handing India a huge 126-run victory. India thus maintained sole dominance in Group A.
India won the toss and elected to bat. They had a rather slow start with Thirushkamini MD and Deepti Sharma opening the innings. They took the team’s score past 150 as they lost their first wicket. Deepti Sharma scored 89 before departing as India had 174 for 1 on the board having played 39.1 overs. This was her second half-century in the tournament as she had scored her maiden in the match against Sri Lanka. Thirushkamini kept on batting, and was joined by Veda Krishnamurthy at the crease, who played a brief knock of 11 runs. Harmanpreet Kaur came out to bat next and remained unbeaten at 20. Thirushkamini remained unbeaten on 113, and became the fourth Indian Women’s player to have scored two One-Day International (ODI) centuries. Ireland’s bowling, as well as fielding, remained pretty ordinary. They failed to produce chances for a long time and when they did, chances were put down as well. For Ireland, the only two successful bowlers were Isobel Joyce and Kim Garth with one wicket each.
Ireland Women had a disastrous start, having lost too many wickets quickly. They lost their first wicket off the first ball as Shikha Pandey got Shauna Kavanagh out leg-before. She got her second wicket in the third over of the innings, getting Kim Garth. Cecelia Joyce was the next to depart as she got run out. Skipper Laura Delany tried to stabilise things a bit as she played a longer innings than the other batters. However, he was dismissed for 21 by Ekta Bisht and Ireland were reduced to 35 for 4. Their innings ended with 124 runs on the board.
For India, Shikha Pandey was exceptional bagging two wickets early. But she was taken off the field following an injury during her run up. Poonam Yadav, too, was brilliant as she bowled a double-wicket maiden during her spell and ended with 3 wickets. Mansi Joshi impressed with her bowling despite not taking wickets. Ekta Bisht also got a couple of wickets.
Brief scores:
India Women 251 for 2 in 50 overs (Deepti Sharma 89, Thirush Kamini 113*; Isobel Joyce 1 for 39, Kim Garth 1 for 38) beat Ireland Women 125 (Isobel Joyce 31, Gaby Lewis 33; Shikha Pandey 2 for 11, Ekta Bisht 2 for 15, Poonam Yadav 3 for 30) by 125 runs.
