India in driver’s seat as West Indies end Day 3, 1st Test on 21-1; trail by 302 runs

India will look to pick up the remaining wickets on Day 4 and wrap up the match with a day to spare.

West Indies end Day 3 of the first Test against India at 33 for 1. West Indies were asked to follow-on after they were bowled out for just 243 in their first innings, thereby conceding a lead of 323 runs. India had no hesitation in enforcing the follow-on. Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami were the pick of the bowlers for India as both of them picked up four wickets apiece. Kraigg Brathwaite played really well for his 74, before he was caught behind. Barring him, Shane Dowrich made an unbeaten 57, that saw West Indies go past the 200-run mark. Skipper Jason Holder too played well for his 36, before he played a rash shot to get out. In the second innings, India struck immediately, with Ishant Sharma trapping Kraigg Brathwaite leg before in the first over itself. This was Ishant’s first wicket of the match. That brought Darren Bravo to the crease for the second time today. Rajendra Chandrika and Bravo played out the remaining overs and India need nine more wickets on Day 4 to win the match and go 1-0 up in the series. West Indies began the day on 31 for 1. It was Shami and Amit Mishra, who struck in the first session. India kept picking wickets at regular intervals.  They will look to repeat their second innings and win the match by a huge margin.

India had posted a mammoth 566 for 8 in their first innings, courtesy of a double ton from Virat Kohli and a composed ton from Ravichandran Ashwin. Mishra ana and Wriddhiman Saha to chipped in with 53 and 40 respectively. Shikhar Dhawan had made 84 on Day 1 after his opening partner Murali Vijay was dismissed early.

India had won the toss on Day 1 and decided to bat first. India have gone in with five bowlers in this match, which included three seamers and a couple of spinners. West Indies on the other hand have a fairly inexperienced squad, but they bat deep. They will look to bat better in their second innings and look to save the match. They have handed a Test debut for all-rounder Roston Chase.
