India, Sri Lanka share honours following KL Rahul’s ton on Day 1 of 2nd Test at Colombo

The 164-run stand between Virat Kohli and KL Rahul steadied India after the early stutter in 2nd Test at Colombo.

India end the first Day of the second of the three-Test series against Sri Lanka at P Sara Oval, Colombo in a  decent situation. They were rocked early before a big stand steadied them thanks to a superb century from KL Rahul. Rahul looked good right from the first ball as India were tested right throughout the day by a disciplined Sri Lankan attack. He batted through as wickets fell around him. India at 319 for the loss of six wickets with Rohit Sharma getting out leg before to Angelo Mathews for a score of 79 which forced the umpires to call it stumps.  Live cricket updates: India vs Sri Lanka 2015, 2nd Test at Colombo, Day 1

India were in early trouble at 12 for two in just the fifth over of the game. Murali Vijay departed in the first over of the game when Dhammika Prasad trapped in front of the stumps. Ajinkya Rahane was promoted at No. 3 but the move failed as Rahane played a loose shot to get caught at third slip by Dimuth Karunaratne. India then were steadied by a 164-run stand between Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. Kohli was positive and took the attack to the Sri Lankan bowlers. He raced away to his fifty of just 63 balls. Kohli though fell after a lean period post lunch to a brilliant catch from Angelo Mathews at first slip for 78. Rahul though kept on playing positively to register his second Test ton in three games. He got good support from Rohit Sharma who came in at No. 5. Rahul brought up his 2nd Test ton but soon fell trying to pull Dushmantha Chameera over the on side. Runs dried up after it Binny holed out after a testing time at the wicket. He holed out to Herath and India were in trouble at 267 for 5. Rohit though ensured India did not lose wickets in a hurry and notched up his third Test half-century, he will be disappointed for getting out at a crucial stage. India will hope Saha can see India through to at least the 400-run mark. Sri Lanka will want to keep taking wickets to keep the Indians in check on the second day of the Test.

Earlier, India won the toss and elected to bat first. India made three changes with Shikhar Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh and Varun Aaron going out for Vijay, Stuart Binny and Umesh Yadav. Sri Lanka had a forced change to make, they replaced Nuwan Pradeep with Dushmantha Chameera.
