Dilip Vengsarkar believes the selection committee, which picked up the 15-member squad for tour of Sri Lanka, consisted of some of the best wise men. The selection committee consisted of Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Mohinder Amarnath, Narendra Hirwani, Surendra Bhave and Raja Venkat.

“I won t go into whether the selectors have made right choices or wrong, but would surely say that it was on expected lines. We have to admit that we don t have enough quality players waiting in the wings,” Vengsarkar was quoted as saying by MiD-Day.

Vengsarkar also told that the team needs more quality players in the current squad.

“It s unfortunate, but true that we don t enough resources to marshall. The selectors decision not to experiment is perhaps because of this. Besides the top players, we don t have so-called new faces who have done consistently well over the past few seasons to make a case,” Vengsarkar said.

The former captain applauded the selectors ‘impartial selection.

“If you see the team, everyone is on merit, so there is no question of regional bias while selecting the squad to tour Sri Lanka,” the former India captain said.

Talking about Ajinkya Rahane s selection, Vengsarkar said, “He has been in good form and so this is the right time to bring him in,” he said.

On being questioned about the importance given to Vijay Hazare Trophy (one-dayers), where young India A players like Akshay Darekar performed well, Vengsarkar said, “I am not sure whether they discussed the Vijay Hazare Trophy performance in the meeting, but the point is, most of the top players skipped the zonal one-dayers.”
