India and Australia will face off on the fourth day of the fourth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Friday. Australia remained in control at the end of Day Three, but India managed to put on an excellent batting display, led by the indomitable new skipper Virat Kohli and Karnataka opening batsman KL Rahul. Day Three of the Sydney Test is referred to nowadays as the “Pink Test” in honour of Glenn McGrath’s wife Jane. However, it was Rahul and Kohli who enjoyed some “pink” form, as they hit their first and 10th Test century respectively. Rahul brought up his ton with a boundary through the off side off the bowling of Mitchell Starc, while Kohli got his century with a push down the ground for two. The highlight of the day for Australia’s bowling would have been when Shane Watson struck twice in quick succession, getting rid of both Ajinkya Rahane and Suresh Raina off successive deliveries. After Rahul and Rohit Sharma added 97 runs for the second wicket, Kohli and Rahul put on well over 100. However, Rahul’s dismissal brought about a shift in momentum.
Rahane came in to bat at No. 5 as India’s third most successful batsman of the series. However, he is also perhaps the most unlucky one. His misfortune at getting poor umpiring dismissals continued when he was adjudged out LBW to a delivery from Watson that would have gone way over the stumps. However, if Rahane was unlucky, Raina was downright careless. On his comeback match, he reached out to a wide delivery and edged one to the man at slip off his first delivery to get out for a duck.
