The joy of India’s resounding win in the first Twenty20 (T20) warm up fixture in the Australia series against a Western Australia XI has been blunted by incoming news that Mohammed Shami’s injury situation may have resurfaced. This could be a crushing blow to India and Shami’s spirits. Shami had only recently spoken about how he was keen to put the frustration of injury behind him but this will definitely dampen his spirits. Importantly, he was India’s second highest wicket-taker in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in Australia and New Zealand and his experience of these conditions will be sorely missed if he indeed cannot play. Shami pulled his hamstring on Friday according to sportstarlive.com. This was the reason the right-armer was not chosen in the game against WAXI. “He suffered an injury during the team’s training and is being monitored. Based on the medical advice on Saturday, it will be decided whether he will continue to be a part of the squad or not,” said a BCCI insider. It is now common knowledge that Shami played the latter half of the World Cup through pain of a knee injury. After a nine-month layoff which invovled surgery, Shami made a comeback in the Indian domestic circuit in the Vijay Hazare Trophy but has been dealt yet another blow. Jasprit Bumrah has reportedly been kept on stand-bye to replace Shami if the latter’s injury does not heal in time.
