India announced their squad for the three-Test series against Sri Lanka on Monday. The list included Murali Vijay, who was nursing a wrist injury and has been away from action since the Sri Lanka series in June. He had to undergo surgery in UK that forced him to miss the IPL. During a preparatory match, Vijay had complained about a pain on his wrist, following which he had to undergo further rehabilitation. Shikhar Dhawan, his replacement, did a splendid job, which could have put Vijay’s spot in jeopardy.
Vijay’s injury woes continued in domestic cricket as well. At the start of Ranji Trophy 2017-18, Vijay twisted his ankle during the second innings of the Tamil Nadu’s opening match, against Andhra. That forced him to miss the second game against Tripura. However, the selectors placed faith on Vijay for the Test series. Here are some excerpts from his interview to The Hindustan Times just ahead of Tamil Nadu’s Ranji Trophy match against Mumbai:
Plans for the Sri Lanka series: With the Sri Lanka series beginning from November 16, Vijay has plenty of time to reflect on his fitness. Vijay considers this comeback as a new phase of his life: “I am like a baby coming out of a mother’s womb now. So just looking forward to the matches, to play, to contribute to be more consistent then what I was. Actually there is no pressure on me because I know what to do at that level. Just want to go there and get a feel of it and contribute to India winning abroad.”

On the mental aspect of cricket: The mental aspect is more important for me. I am just coming out of an injury and I want to eradicate all the doubts on that side of my brain so I am just looking forward for … as much time possible I want to stay in this match and take it from there.
