Preparing ahead of the upcoming five-match ODI series against India, West Indies all-rounder, Darren Sammy has said that Chris Gayle‘s absence from the squad would not cause any harm to the confidence of the team.
Gayle has suffered a lower-back injury and would miss both the ODI and T20 series against India. Lat month, he also missed the final test in opposition to Bangladesh. The first of the five ODI’s is set to take place on Wednesday at Kochi, reports Jamaica Observer.
“The last time we played India Chris got injured in the first game and we played the series without him and we won the second match and it ended two one. But you always gonna miss Chris in any team but we not gonna let it be a negative towards us.” said former skipper, Sammy.
Gayle had a good Test series this summer at home as he score three fifty’s in four games, but has been out of action from competitive cricket since he played the first Test against Bangladesh in early September. However, he has envisaged that he would be fit on time for the Test series against India.
“It is another opportunity for someone else to come out and showcase their talent. The team will go out there with the confidence knowing that we can still compete and do well and win matches against India and it will be good to do so before the world cup.” said Sammy referring to Gayle’s absence.
Sammy also said that the players are not worried about missing Gayle in the series but are instead focused on the upcoming fove-match ODI series against India as they are preparing tough and glowing for the series and expect it to be an excellent and thrilling contest. He also divulged that the players are happy to have legendary, Sir Curtly Ambrose in the management who is currently the Bowling Consultant for the team.
“For me being in the same dressing room as Ambrose my childhood hero is a massive plus. I would want to go out and try and pick his brain, impress him and I think that in itself is motivation for the dressing room and that’s what’s been happening.” he said.
