New Delhi: The IPL Governing Council today decided to felicitate five legends — Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag, during the opening ceremony of cash-rich league. “The decision was taken at the GC meeting today that five legends of Indian cricket — Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag will be felicitated during the opening ceremony in Hyderabad on April 5,” IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla told reporters after the completion of IPL GC meet.
Out of the five, four are former India captains. However it was not known why former captain and current national coach Anil Kumble, an equal contributor along with these five during Indian cricket’s golden phase, has not been included in the felicitation list. Another key decisions which was taken was that a one time ex-gratia payment to former women India international will be presented at each individual player’s home IPL venue.
“Diana Edulji made a request that players who are getting one time benefit should be paid at their respective IPL centres during the match,” an IPL GC member said. In fact, the same member, who met Vinod Rai for the first time, said that every member was impressed with Mr Rai’s observation. “He was telling us that CoA’s responsibility is to hand over the Board to the elected office bearers as quickly as possible. He was very cordial and open to our point of view,” the official said.
