New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori is set to give a miss to their Group A World Cup match against Canada on Sunday, in order to rest his injured knee in a bid to be fit for their all important match against Sri Lanka which could decide the group topper.
Vettori injured his right knee while attempting a catch during New Zealand’s crushing win over Pakistan at Pallekele on Tuesday and was in some doubt for the remainder of the tournament.
“The crucial thing is I should be able to continue on with the tournament,” Vettori said. “There was still a lot of swelling around the joint but I really want to play in that Sri Lanka game heading towards those quarterfinals.
“For me, it’s about symptoms and the sooner those symptoms dissipate the quicker I can get back on the field, which is what everyone wants.”
