Inzamam-ul-Haq was named Pakistan’s chief selector on Monday. Former Pakistan skipper Inzamam has been coaching Afghanistan since October 2015 and was originally signed till December. However, Afghanistan Cricket Board Chief Shafiq Stanikzai on Saturday revealed that the board for ready to release him before that. Although Inzamam has worked with Pakistan team before, it will be his first stint with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He earlier was their batting consultant in the period 2012-13. This change is one of the many changes being taken place in PCB following Pakistan’s poor show in the ICC World T20 2016. Inzamam will now head a panel that includes former opening batsman Wajahatullah Wasti, Tauseef Ahmed, an offspinner who played 34 Tests and 70 ODIs and all-rounder Wasim Haider, who played three ODIs and over a 100 first-class and limited-overs matches.

Shahid Afridi’s resignation from Pakistan’s Twenty20 International (T20I) captaincy after Pakistan’s elimination from the World T20 had other consequences as well. Two days later saw Pakistan’s then coach Waqar Younis stepping down as Pakistan’s coach. Waqar and team manager Intikhab Alam had made several points pointing the poor selections during their tenure. Waqar recommended that the chief selector “should be someone who has played modern-era cricket and has a positive vision” and had recommended Inzamam for the job.
