Sunrisers Hyderabad need 124 runs to win the match © PTI
Hyderabad: Apr 19, 2013
SRH 127/5 | Overs 18.5 | Perera 23*, Ashish Reddy 7*
Azhar Mahmood offers Thisara Perera length and the Sri Lankan carts it powerfully over long on for six. Mahmood doesn’t learn and commits the same mistake, and this time, Perera targets the stands behind deep mid-wicket. Mahmood clearly gives up and bowls ANOTHER length ball which Perera dispatches behind long on again.
Sunrisers win by 5 wickets.
SRH 106/5 | Overs 18 | Perera 4*, Ashish Reddy 6*
Ashish Reddy swings and gets the ball to bounce just wide of long on and the Sunrisers get a much-needed boundary.
Sunrisers need 18 runs from 12 balls.
SRH 99/5 | Overs 17 | Perera 1*, Ashish Reddy 0* OUT! Samantray 10(12)
Biplab Samantray falls leg-before to Azhar Mahmood and suddenly, Punjab are sniffing a spectacular comeback. Have the Sunrisers kept too much for too late? Thisara Perera is still there though.
Sunrisers need 25 runs from 18 balls.
SRH 97/4 | Overs 16 | Samantray 10*, Perera 1* OUT! White 16(23)
Manpreet Gony’s delivery keeps low and bowls Cameron White. Biplab Samantray then cracks a sweet backfoot punch through to the deep point fence to ease the nerves. Can we see a twist in the tale here?
Sunrisers need 27 runs from 24 balls.
SRH 87/3 | Overs 15 | White 16*, Samantray 5*
Five runs come off the 15th over and the Sunrisers need another 37 from 30 balls.
SRH 82/3 | Overs 14 | White 13*, Samantray 3*
Cameron White gently pulls Manpreet Gony’s short-pitched delivery to the fine leg fence. Punjab were 88 for three at this stage and this is where the collapse started. Sunrisers need 42 runs from 36 balls.
SRH 76/3 | Overs 13 | White 8*, Samantray 2*
Azhar Mahmood comes in and gives away six runs. Punjab need wickets now! Sunrisers need 49 runs from 42 balls.
SRH 70/3 | Overs 12 | White 5*, Samantray 0* OUT! Vihari 46(33)
Needless aggression from Hanuma Vihari and he has thrown his wicket away. The right-hander tries to clear cover with a lofted drive, but finds the safe hands of David Hussey. Totally unnecessary from the youngster.
SRH 66/2 | Overs 11 | Vihari 43*, White 4*
Hanuma Vihari flicks Dimitri Mascarenhas to deep fine leg for four more. This is good batting from the Sunrisers, who should sail home from here.
SRH 56/2 | Overs 10 | Vihari 35*, White 2*
Hanuma Vihari looks like a very bright prospect. He gives himself room and drives Piyush Chawla wide of long off for four. This is exactly what Hyderabad need — runs off the ground.
SRH 50/2 | Overs 9 | Vihari 30*, White 1*
Dimitri Mascarenhas comes back and bowls a second tidy over, giving just two runs. Still no reason to panick for the Sunrisers. They need to keep the ball on the ground.
SRH 48/2 | Overs 8 | Vihari 27*, White 0* OUT! Akshath Reddy 19(17)
Akshath Reddy flicks Manpreet Gony over mid on and the Sunrisers get four with no one to cover at the boundary. Reddy then tries to smack the bowler straight down the ground, but Azhar Mahmood jumps in from nowhere to pluck out a catch. End of what was looking like a good partnership. The first Strategic Timeout is taken.
SRH 43/1 | Overs 7 | Akshath Reddy 15*, Vihari 27*
Piyush Chawla comes into the attack and concedes two boundaries to Hanuma Vihari. The Sunrisers are gaining confidence by the minute and it’s not good news for Punjab.
SRH 33/1 | Overs 6 | Akshath Reddy 14*, Vihari 19*
Hanuma Vihari gets the first boundary for the Sunrisers with a glorious cover drive. Hyderabad get 33 runs off the six overs of fielding restrictions at the loss of just one wicket. They wouldn’t be too worried the way they are going.
SRH 25/1 | Overs 5 | Akshath Reddy 11*, Vihari 14*
Akshath Reddy and Hanuma Vihari takes turns to push the ball into the covers for three runs each. Gurkeerat Singh does well giving chase to prevent the boundaries and saves two valuable runs.
SRH 16/1 | Overs 4 | Akshath Reddy 7*, Vihari 9*
Dimitri Mascarenhas bowls a tidy over as the Sunrisers deal in singles. They don’t need to accelerate as such at this stage, and are looking to preserve the wickets.
SRH 11/1 | Overs 3 | Akshath Reddy 6*, Vihari 5*
Praveen Kumar continues to trouble the Hyderabad batsmen with his swing and bowls another neat over. The pressure is on Hyderabad here.
SRH 8/1 | Overs 2 | Akshath Reddy 6*, Vihari 2*
Dimitri Mascarenhas comes in for a bowl in his first game of IPL 6. He bowls a good over until Akshath Reddy gives the charge and whacks him to the wide long on fence.
SRH 0/1 | Overs 1 | Akshath Reddy 0*, Vihari 0* OUT! de Kock 0(4)
Praveen Kumar swings it in and bowls Quinton de Kock for a duck! Punjab are not out of this yet! Wicket maiden to start off with.
So, the Sunrisers Hyderabad would fancy themselves in this chase of 124 at home. The pitch has slowed down by the over and the home team don’t have the best of batting line-ups, but they would do really badly to not win this comfortably. Join us in a bit for the chase.
KXIP 123/9 | Overs 20 | Mascarenhas 5*, Praveen 3*
Thisara Perera bowls a good over and Punjab can just get six runs off it. Punjab are perhaps 20 short of where they would have hoped to be when they were 88 for three in 14 overs.
KXIP 117/9 | Overs 19 | Mascarenhas 1*, Praveen 1* OUT! Gurkeerat 17(12)
Gurkeerat Singh gives himself room and tries to slice Dale Steyn to third man, but the South African is too quick for the batsman’s liking. Steyn’s delivery shatters into the stumps as Punjab’s collapse is almost complete.
KXIP 115/8 | Overs 18 | Gurkeerat 12*, Gony 0* OUT! Mahmood 4(4) OUT! Gony 0(0) OUT! Vohra 0(1)
Gurkeerat Singh sweeps Amit Sharma to the deep square-leg fence, before Azhar Mahmood gets four more with a hoick to extra cover. However, the Pakistan-born Englishman holes out to long on to further dent Punjab’s hopes of reaching 130-plus. Manpreet Gony then goes for a second run that was never there and is run out by a mile. Punjab would do well to reach 120 from the looks of it. Mishra then gets another one as Manan Vohra holes out to Ishant Sharma.
KXIP 105/5 | Overs 17 | Gurkeerat 12*, Mahmood 0* OUT! D Hussey 22(24)
David Hussey tries twice to cut Ishant Sharma over deep point by giving himself room and perishes the second time as he fails to connect properly and Akshath Reddy takes the catch. It turns out to be a fantastic over for Hyderabad as Ishant conceded just three runs.
KXIP 102/4 | Overs 16 | D Hussey 21*, Gurkeerat 10*
Gurkeerat Singh takes the charge to Amit Sharma and plays the lofted straight drive that just about manages to clear the long on fence. Punjab need more of these.
KXIP 92/4 | Overs 15 | D Hussey 19*, Gurkeerat 2* OUT! Chawla 23(15)
Piyush Chawla’s cameo comes to an end as he runs himself out going for the quick single. Chawla pushes Thisara Perera’s delivery towards mid-wicket and sets off. Akshath Reddy swoops in, picks up the ball and gets a flat throw through to Perera who whips off the bails with Chawla a few yards out. Time for the second Strategic Timeout.
KXIP 88/3 | Overs 14 | D Hussey 17*, Chawla 23*
David Hussey finally lets loose as Ishant Sharma comes back into the attack and gets his first six via a pull over the deep mid-wicket fence.
KXIP 79/3 | Overs 13 | D Hussey 10*, Chawla 22*
Thisara Perera bowls a good over, giving away just three runs. David Hussey has still not unshackled himself here.
KXIP 76/3 | Overs 12 | D Hussey 9*, Chawla 20*
Piyush Chawla uses his feet against Amit Mishra this time and hoicks him to the long on fence for four. The commentators say that 140 should be a defendable score on this surface, which has a considerable tinge of green but is expected to slow down as the game progresses.
KXIP 69/3 | Overs 11 | D Hussey 7*, Chawla 15*
Piyush Chawla shows exactly why he is out there as he carts Karan Sharma for consecutive sixes — the first off a sweep over deep square leg and the next one being probably the shot of the tournament by a ‘tail-ender’ as the left-hander stepped out and whacked the leg-spinner straight down the ground for another maximum. The left-handed Chawla seems to have negated Karan’s copious turn; good thinking by Adam Gilchrist!
KXIP 55/3 | Overs 10 | D Hussey 6*, Chawla 2*
Surprise, surprise, as it’s not Manan Vohra or Gurkeerat Singh, but Piyush Chawla who comes out to join David Hussey. Meanwhile, Dale Steyn bowls a third steamy over and almost bowls David Hussey. The Australian just about manages to drag the ball centimetres wide of off-stump. As an insult to injury for Steyn, the ball beats the ‘keeper and rolls over to the fence.
KXIP 48/3 | Overs 9 | D Hussey 1*, Chawla 0* OUT! Gilchrist 26(25) OUT! Valthaty 6(17)
Karan Sharma ensures that it isn’t Adam Gilchrist’s night. The veteran Australian was under pressure with Punjab trailing with their run-rate and goes for the massive heave-pull over deep mid-wicket, but hits it straight down the throat of Ishant Sharma. While the new batsman Mana Vohra comes in, the first Strategic Timeout is taken. Valthaty then decides to follow his captain back to the pavilion. The right-hander panicks and goes for maximum straight down the ground, but fails to connect as the ball goes straight to Thisara Perera at long off.
KXIP 45/1 | Overs 8 | Gilchrist 25*, Valthaty 5*
Amit Mishra comes into the attack and bowls a tidy over, giving just three runs. Punjab need to pick up their run-rate and quick!
KXIP 42/1 | Overs 7 | Gilchrist 23*, Valthaty 4*
Leg-spinner Karan Sharma is turning the ball a mile! Paul Valthaty has no clue of what’s happening as the ball continually beats the bat. The last ball of the over beats even the keeper and rolls to the fence for four byes.
KXIP 36/1 | Overs 6 | Gilchrist 23*, Valthaty 2*
This time, it is Ishant Sharma who offers Adam Gilchrist width and the Australian crashes it into the deep point fence.
KXIP 29/1 | Overs 5 | Gilchrist 18*, Valthaty 0*
Thisara Perera comes into the attack and offers Adam Gilchrist width straight away. Even if he is struggling, Gilchrist is not going to leave that unpunished. The swashbuckling left-hander frees his arms and cuts it gloriously for four. Perera then bowls short and Gilchrist gets his trademark pull out of the bag and spanks the Sri Lankan for two consecutive boundaries to deep mid-wicket and wide long on. Hyderabad beware! Gilly has let loose!
KXIP 17/1 | Overs 4 | Gilchrist 6*, Valthaty 0*
Dale Steyn steams in and bowls boomers at 140-plus and the Punjab batsmen manage just one run in the over. This is a great start by the home team. Adam Gilchrist continues to struggle to connect bat with ball.
KXIP 16/1 | Overs 3 | Gilchrist 5*, Valthaty 0* OUT! Mandeep 10(11)
Hanuma Vihari, as always, is taken off the attack after the first over as Ishant Sharma comes into the attack. Mandeep Singh takes the attack straight to the pacer as he pulls him for four to a vacant deep square-leg fence. However, Ishant has the last laugh as Mandeep goes for the big heave over mid-wicket but finds the leading edge that goes high in the air. Wicketkeeper Quinton de Cock just about manages to take the catch.
KXIP 6/0 | Overs 2 | Mandeep 2*, Gilchrist 4*
Adam Gilchrist gets a crisp pull through off Dale Steyn that deserved four, but goes straight to deep square-leg. Steyn’s over is tight as ever, and Punjab can just get four singles.
KXIP 2/0 | Overs 1 | Mandeep 1*, Gilchrist 1*
Cameron White tosses the ball to part-time spinner Hanuma Vihari first up and the Hyderabadi bowls a decent first over, giving away just two runs.
Kings XI Punjab skipper Adam Gilchrist has won the toss against the Sunrisers Hyderabad and has elected to bat first in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match here.
In team news, Dimitri Mascarenhas gets a first game this season and Paul Valthaty has also come in for the home team.
For Hyderabad, Akshath Reddy comes in for Parthiv Patel. Kumar Sangakkara misses out again and Cameron White is captaining Hyderabad.
