In a contest to avoid the last spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL), 2013 Pune Warriors India scored against 172 the Delhi Daredevils. Aaron Finch‘s brisk half-century set up things for Pune and a late surge from Angelo Mathews and Luke Wright powered them to their eventual total.

Finch won the toss and elected to bat first. Ashok Dinda came back for Pune in place of Ishwar Pandey. Delhi brought in Bharat Chipli and Shahbaz Nadeem into the eleven.

Pune got off to yet another good start. Robin Uthappa and Finch have been in good form this season and carried that into this game. Their partnership came to an abrupt as Uthappa was caught at point against the run of play.

Finch continued to attack after Uthappa’s dismissal. Umesh Yadav was smashed for two sixes and a four in the ninth over as Finch looked to build a platform. He continued to find the boundaries and cleared the boundaries with ease. Manish Pandey did not last too long and was bowled by Nadeem in the 10th over.

The Pune skipper brought up his half century in the 12th over as he took only 31 balls for it. However, he fell soon after as he mistimed a flick off Siddharth Kaul and was caught by Sehwag at mid-wicket. They slipped further as Yuvraj lost his wicket to Irfan Pathan in the 14th over.

Wright and Mathews took charge in the slog overs and gradually accelerated. Wright got going with a four through mid-wicket and Mathews bagged a streaky maximum over third-man.

Moving about the crease, they tried to disturb the rhythm of the bowlers and were finding the gaps. Wright was the dominant partner early on and found the boundaries regularly. Their 50 run partnership came off only 28 balls as Mathews carted Yadav for six over long-on.

Later in that over, Wright hit a huge six over wide long-on and then smashed a four over his head. Luck was on his side as even the edges went to the boundaries. That over cost Delhi 24 runs.

Delhi breathed a sigh of relief as Kaul dismissed Wright in the last over. It was a good over, until Raiphi Gomez guided the last ball with a cheeky reverse sweep to the third-man boundary. Pune have the runs on the board and would be itching to defend it.

Brief scores:

Pune Warriors India 172 for 5 in 20 overs (Aaron Finch 52, Luke Wright 44; Siddharth Kaul 2 for 27, Shahbaz Nadeem 1 for 21) vs Delhi Daredevils.
