In an absolute surprise twist of events, former Chairman and Commissioner of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Lalit Modi has offered support to the victims of the families affected by the drought in Maharashtra. Modi shared a series of posts on the micro-blogging site Twitter saying that there was a lot that the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) could do to help those in need. Modi said in one of his tweets that the BCCI should donate the 1000 crore profit that it will make out of the IPL this year to the drought affected people. He continued saying that the IPL owes this to the people of India in a series of tweets to follow. In another tweet Modi said that it was time for the BCCI to show its humane side and that the IPL as he had coined was ‘Indian People League’. The controversial figure also said in one of his tweets – “As President of the #RCA who are stakeholders in the @IPL Profits we will forego our share for drought victims”. He later thanked people for the compliments he was receiving for an initiative like this. And a couple of re-tweets followed relating to the same issue. A few days back the Bombay High Court slammed the MCA and said “How can you waste water like this? Are people more important or IPL? How can you be so careless?” This is criminal wastage. You know the situation in Maharashtra.” Although, it allowed the first match of the IPL season 9 to take place in Mumbai as scheduled.
