After Mumbai Indians (MI) were restricted to a sub-par total of 142 against a clinical bowling performance from Delhi Daredevils (DD), everything went right for the hosts. MI began to defend their total well by reducing DD to 24 for 6 at one point. Mitchell McClenaghan ran through the DD batting line-up after his torrid time against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). McClenaghan had a forgettable innings against KXIP where he leaked 46 runs, of which 28 came in a single over when Glenn Maxwell went berserk. In 6 games, McClenaghan had taken just 9 wickets at an economy rate of 9.12. On his return to save MI from a precarious condition against DD, McClenaghan credited captain Rohit Sharma and team management for instilling confidence in him. Full Cricket Scorecard, Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Daredevils, IPL 2017, Match 25

During the post-match press conference, McClenaghan explained the game plan to defend their total of 142: “When you think you have a sub-par score on a pretty good wicket, the tendency is to go out and be too aggressive with the ball and think you have to make things happen from the outset. We worked hard with the analysts and got the right plans in place. We bowled with control, but with a nice presence. We have a nice sense of confidence, but not arrogance, which is nice in a group like this because you know you can back the skills of the bloke next to you and he’s going to give his 100 per cent for you.”

McClenaghan stressed on the immense backing that he receives from the Mumbai skipper: “Rohit has been fantastic on and off the field, understanding in terms of knowing a lot of bowlers, in this tournament in particular, have gone for runs. He knows some days it may not be your day. He instils you with an incredible amount of confidence. You’re never worried; you’re never thinking ‘If I don’t bowl a good over, I’m going to get dropped.’”

MI have made their best start in IPL history with 6 victories on trot. McClenaghan is hopeful of his side maintaining the consistency: “As soon as you underestimate someone, that’s when you’re going to get kicked in the teeth. We’ve got a very level management and a level team. A fresh start, every time. The key for us is not to get too high or get too low. Be consistent because there are ups and downs in T20 cricket.”
