Chasing a stiff total of 169 on the flat track of Feroz Shah Kotla, Steven Smith-led Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) fell 7-run short and lost to Delhi Daredevils (DD) in 52nd match of 10th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL). The defeat means, RPS now have to wish for Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) defeat in their last league stage match against Gujarat Lions (GL), which will be played on Saturday at Green Park, Kanpur. If SRH, somehow, manage to win their clash against GL, it will be a must-win match for both RPS and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in their final clash in league stage. After the defeat, Smith seemed dejected and expressed his views during the post match ceremony saying, “We let a few runs in the field. I thought 160 was par. Losing a few wickets probably cost us.”
Smith then openly accepted that his side will be dependant on SRH’s result in the next match. If things did not go their way, they have to win anyhow against KXIP and taking every match as final. “Just taking one game at a time at the moment. There’s a game tomorrow, if the result goes our way we are through, or else we will have to win our last game. Every game is a final for us now,” said Smith.
He further added that RPS have played quality cricket in this edition of IPL and there are still some areas to work on. “Every game is a final for us now. We have played some pretty good cricket, but we cannot win every game. But there were a few areas we will have a look at that tomorrow,” added Smith.
RPS will now encounter KXIP at their home venue of Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune on Sunday.
