Shreyas Iyer played a magnificent knock to help Delhi Daredevils (DD) overcome Gujarat Lions (GL) in match 50 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 at Kanpur. Shreyas missed out on a well deserved ton by just four runs, but his 57-ball 96 was good enough to beat GL by two wickets and complete a double over them this season. Shreyas, who missed the initial stages of the tournament due to chicken pox said that DD winning the match was more important that his hundred. He also said that he was disappointed that he could not stay at the crease till the end to finish the game off. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: Gujarat Lions (GL) vs Delhi Daredevils (DD), IPL 2017, Match 50
“I would have been more happy if I had finished off the game. Nonetheless, a great knock. I wasn’t thinking about my 100. I just wanted to get my team through. We had lost early wickets, I thought I’ll keep knocking singles and doubles. It worked out. 100 doesn’t really matter. Winning the match for the team is more important,” Shreyas said, while receiving his Man of the Match award. Talking about his strategy in the match, Shreyas added, “At the start of the innings, I was just trying to time the ball. I was pushing them in the gap and the outfield was really quick. Getting boundaries more than sixes is an achievement too.” FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: Gujarat Lions (GL) vs Delhi Daredevils (DD), IPL 2017, Match 50
DD have two more matches to play – against Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) on May 12 and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on May 14. Shreyas vowed to put in Man of the Match performances in those matches as well. “Two more matches left, hopefully I will see to it that I get two more Man of the Matches,” said the young DD batsman.
DD are currently on the sixth position in the IPL 2017 table with 10 points. Like GL – who are a spot below them – DD too are out of contention for a place in the playoffs.
