Chennai Super Kings suffered a huge injury setback three weeks before the start of their title defence, with opening bastmen Devon Conway sidelined until May. Conway, who was named player of the match in Chennai’s 2023 final victory over Gujarat Titans, will be sidelined for nearly eight weeks after having surgery on his left thumb last week.

Conway hurt his thumb during the T20I series against Australia and hence missed the current Test series. A medical consultation led to the decision to proceed with surgery. The rehabilitation time is expected to last eight weeks, implying that the left-handed opener would miss more than half of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, which begins on March 22 with CSK hosting Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Conway came into spotlight in 2022, when CSK paid INR 1 crore for the New Zealand star at the Mega Auction. In 23 games for the franchise, he scored 924 runs at 48.63, including nine fifties. Last season, he scored 672 runs in 16 matches, including six fifties, which was his most prominent performance.
