Ahead of the commencement of the IPL 2024 tournament on March 22, the Indian Premier League franchise Lucknow Super Giants has named explosive West Indies batsman Nicholas Pooran as the vice-captain for the upcoming season, succeeding all-rounder Krunal Pandya. The announcement precedes LSG’s first match of IPL 2024 against the Rajasthan Royals on March 24 in Jaipur.

In the 2023 auction, LSG secured Pooran for INR 16 crore, making him the most expensive wicketkeeper purchase in IPL history. With a strike rate of nearly 173, the hard-hitting Caribbean player showcased his prowess during the IPL 2023 season, amassing 358 runs. His aggressive batting style is expected to provide a significant boost to Lucknow’s batting lineup.

Pooran assumes the vice-captaincy replacing Krunal, who previously served as co-captain alongside skipper KL Rahul. Rahul was depicted in a video transferring the vice-captain’s jersey, adorned with Pooran’s number 29, as showcased on LSG’s official social media platform.

Designating Pooran as vice-captain revitalizes the team dynamics, complementing Rahul’s leadership while bringing forth valuable insights from his international cricket experience. Despite formerly captaining the West Indies side, Pooran opted to step down from the role. Furthermore, he assumed the captaincy for the MI Emirates during the ILT20 2024 season.
