The Indian Premier League Governing Council (IPL GC), which was gathered on Saturday, decided to continue the Impact Player rule for the 2025 season of IPL.

This rule was introduced to the game during the 2013 season, and has been the cause of vertical division of opinion ever since. The Impact Player rule allows a team to replace a player in order to bring a special batsman or bowler as needed according to match situations.

Even in the meeting which BCCI had with the team owners, some franchises like Delhi Capitals were not in complete favour of the rule as it mainly reduced the importance of all-rounders.

“We did not really find the need to take away the Impact Player rule because it adds a new dimension to the game and gives team something to think. It’s also quite exciting for the fans as well,” a source informed PTI after the GC meeting.

The nine highest totals in the IPL in fact, have been made only after the Impact Player rule got introduced. The team crossed 250 runs without any effort in the IPL 2024.

“We had a chat with the franchise owners recently. The impact player rule has its pros and cons. The negative is that it makes the allrounder’s role redundant. The positive is that it creates a spot for an Indian player to showcase his talent,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah had said recently.
