Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Anurag Thakur has welcomed the verdict by the Supreme Court-appointed Lodha Panel that saw life bans being handed to Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra, as well as witnessed the suspension of the owners of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) franchises in a landmark announcement on Tuesday. “We respect the verdict of Lodha Committee & would undertake a collective decision in a transparent manner in the right direction and in the larger interest of the game after the verdict is received and analysed,” Thakur was quoted as saying in a post on his Twitter account.
The verdict, which was originally pushed to July 14 from June 29, has effectively ruled two top-notch sides from competing in the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) for the next two years due to the suspensions handed to India Cements Ltd. and Jaipur IPL Cricket Pvt Ltd, the owners of the CSK and RR franchises respectively. While Meiyappan and Kundra were banned from participating in any cricket-related activities for life, the franchise owners were handed the punishments for not doing enough on their part.
Meanwhile, the BCCI has stated that it will discuss the future of the IPL following the verdict, especially that of players from either teams. The decision was hailed by many, especially Justice Mukul Mudgal, who headed the committee that probed into the betting scam.
