Karnataka have taken the lead against Rest of India (ROI) in the Irani Trophy 2013-14 game at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. At tea, Karnataka are 279 for four and are leading ROI by 78 runs. Stuart Binny‘s aggressive batting helped his team score at a brisk rate.

In the first hour after lunch, Karnataka moved slowly with Karun Nair and Ganesh Satish holding fort. While Satish dazzled in the morning with some fluent strokes, he was dour and resolute in the afternoon, content in blocking.

Early in the session, a chance went down as Nair slammed it straight onto Jiwanjot Singh’s shin at short-leg off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh. There was nothing much he could do as it came too fast. Sathish was closing in on the ton, but on 84, he tentatively played a Harbhajan delivery outside off and was taken by the wicketkeeper. Kedar Jadhav had the gloves then as Dinesh Karthik was off the field due to a minor injury.

That brought Binny to the middle and he was in an attacking mode instantly. Karnataka moved past ROI’s score and Binny teed off with the spinners in play. Harbhajan was lofted into the stands over long-off, later Amit Mishra was carted inside-out over cover for maximum. Binny had done well with the ball and carried it with the bat as he searched for boundaries.

With Binny attacking, even Nair found a bit more fluency as he also essayed a few boundaries. He completed his boundary at the brink of tea with a boundary. 120 runs were scored in this session. Nair is unbeaten in 63 and Binny is unbeaten on 45.
