Cricketing fans across the world may not have witness the last season of ICC Champions Trophy, as BCCI’s interim-President Jagmohan Dalmiya is reportedly making efforts to ensure curtains don’t fall on the tournament.
According to Hindustan Times, the sources close to Dalmiya informed that he will raise the issue in the ICC Annual Conference which starts on Tuesday at Lord’s in London.
It was during his tenure as the ICC President, Dalmiya launched the event to generate funds for the governing body and promote cricket in non-Test playing nations. As a result, the first two editions of Champions Trophy were organised in Bangladesh (1998) and Kenya (2000).
However, the increasing popularity of Twenty20 World Cup has decreased the interest in Champions Trophy event. The latest edition was the final chapter for the tournament, which was won by India.
“The event is close to his heart, he will never want it to be scrapped from the Future Tours Programme. He will in all probability raise it in the ICC board of directors’ meeting,” a source said.
ICC has planned to scrap the ICC Champions Trophy, which is slated to be replaced by the ICC Test Championship.
