New Delhi: BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya, who left for heavenly abode yesterday, donated his eyes to Vanmukta Eye Bank, a part of the city’s Susrut Eye Foundation and Research Centre. “It may be recalled that social welfare programmes about ‘Eradication of Blindness’ which included restoration of eye-sight through cornea grafting and transplantations were initiated by Mr. Dalmiya earlier,” BCCI was quoted as saying in a press release. “The themes were widely known as ‘Cricket for Life beyond Death’ and ‘Chance of Second Innings’,” it stated. This gesture by Dalmiya for a noble cause is praiseworthy. Some bollywood personalities had also vowed to donate their eyes when they die including actress Aishwarya Rai who is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful women in the world. Dalmiya was 75-year-old when he died on September 20, 2015. He died because of cardiac arrest in ICU of BM Birla hospital in Kolkata. Dalmiya will fondly be remembered as a father figure for Indian cricket, who made BCCI the most powerful and richest cricket body in the world. Eye is one of the most important parts of the human body since it is an important sense organ. A dead man’s eye can be valuable for blind people and can be transplanted by doctors to help the blind person gain his or her sight. Donating one’s eyes helps the blind to come out of his dark life and relish the universe in colours; needless to say that it helps them in their day-to-day life. According to doctors, eyes should be donated within six hours of demise of a person. READ: Tiger Pataudi had donated his eye
