New Zealand in pursuit of 345 got off to the worst possible starts. Their openers Martin Guptill and Tom Latham were dismissed without troubling the scorers for a duck and New Zealand were reduced to 0 for two in the second over. Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson built an excellent partnership in the first innings, but were unable to repeat their performance in this innings as Taylor was out LBW to Broad for just eight. While everyone expected New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum to walk in at No.5, it was BJ Watling, who made his way to the crease.
Watling and Williamson are the unbeaten batsmen at the end of the first session on Day Five. On Day One, New Zealand had won the toss and elected to bowl first. England made 389 and New Zealand replied to it with 523, after a majestic century from Williamson. Cook’s heroics then helped England set a target for 345.
