England international Jason Roy was “extremely embarrassed by a self-inflicted injury playing in the T20 Blast game for Surrey against Hampshire on August 15. He threw his bat in exasperation after getting out, the bat to his disliking ricocheted back and hit him bang in the face.

As a result, the aggressive batsman will now miss Surrey’s game today at Cardiff against Glamorgan. “I’m extremely embarrassed and apologetic to my teammates and fans for this moment of stupidity,” Roy said.

“Following my dismissal on Wednesday evening, I threw my bat into the ground purely out of self-frustration. It bounced, hit me, and as a result I sustained the injury. I’ve never been so motivated and so positive about my game, and I assure you I will learn from my mistake as I am my own biggest critic,” he added.

It is a freak injury and Roy would not want to repeat this mistake going forward as he is a valuable member of his team and the England limited-overs set-up.

The game between Surrey and Glamorgan starts at 11 pm IST.
