Jeetan Patel, the former New Zealand spinner, has crossed the landmark of 800 first-class wickets to help bowl his English club Warwickshire back into Division One of the County Championship.

This makes him the fifth New Zealand bowler to do so, after the legendary Sir Richard Hadlee (1490), CV Grimmett (1424), SG Smith (955) and TL Pritchard (818).

In his ninth season for Warwickshire, Patel claimed 10 wickets as Glamorgan were beaten by an innings and 35 runs to keep the Division Two leaders on track for promotion back into the top league next season.

Following figures of 7/83 in Glamorgan’s first innings, Patel added 3/23 in their second to finish with match figures of 10/106. This took his returns for Warwickshire to 402 wickets, with 21 five-wicket hauls and four ten-wicket bags. Patel was named Warwickshire captain last season.

Overall, the 38-year-old has 806 first-class wickets from 268 matches. Of these, 318 have come for his native Wellington and 65 for New Zealand in 24 Tests.
