Controversy and Bangladesh cricket go hand in hand it seems. Not long back, their fans were involved in a photoshop-controversy with their Indian counterparts, something which created a huge furore during the Asia Cup T20 earlier this year. Team India gave a befitting reply by beating them emphatically in the final. Later during the ICC World T20 2016, their former captain and wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim posted a tweet, which was in bad taste, after India’s semi-final exit. He later took it down, but the damage had been done by then.

The second One-Day International (ODI) between England and Bangladesh at Mirpur on Sunday once again brought the ugly side of Bangladesh cricket to the forefront. During the keenly contested game, which Bangladesh won by 34 runs, England captain Jos Buttler was given a verbal send-off, which triggered tension between the two teams. Buttler exchanged some heated words with the opposition team players before going back. After the match, Buttler’s deputy Ben Stokes also had an altercation with Bangladeshi opener Tamim Iqbal during the psot-match handshakes.

Stokes later wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter: “Congrats to Bangladesh on the win tonight, they outplayed us, what I won’t stand for is someone putting a shoulder to my team-mate at handshakes.” Skipper Buttler also spoke about the incidents at the post-match presser. When asked why he lost his cool, he said: “Mainly just the way they celebrated by running towards me and giving me a bit of a send-off. But emotions were running high, they were obviously delighted to get the wicket, maybe I should have just walked away.”

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza also admitted both teams went too far. “I don’t know who spoke to Buttler. I was focusing on the review that I took, and then I got excited by the decision,” he said. “Sometimes, a lot of things happen in the heat of the moment. But players from both sides should control themselves.” Match-referee Javagal Srinath will now consider what action to take against those involved in the incidents. It can be safely assumed though that the third and final game of the series, which has now become the series decider, will be exciting to watch.
