England were bowled out for 171 after being asked to bat first by South Africa. England were not able to score quickly in the first two overs as Kagiso Rabada and Kyle Abbott bowled with some impeccable line and length. Kagiso Rabada then cleaned up Jason Roy for nine. It was anticipated that England will take some time to recover from then onwards but Joe Root, who came next made his intentions clear by hitting the very first ball for a boundary. He followed it up with a six in the next over. Alex Hales joined the party and struck another maximum. However, South Africa came back strongly sending both of them back to the pavilion on consecutive deliveries. Jos Buttler and Eoin Morgan then tried to steady the ship. After getting a feel of the wicket, they then changed their batting gear and started hitting even good deliveries over the ropes. Buttler then tried to make room and hit the ball hard towrards the covers but found the fielder. Buttler scored 58 off 28 balls hitting four boundaries and as many sixes. Last thing that England wanted was another run out. Eoin Morgan hit the ball straight but Kyle Abbot was able to get his fingers on it and the ball hit the stumps; Stokes was out of his crease. England faced an unlikely batting collapsed as they could manage only 171 although five overs back it appeared that they could well go past the 200-run mark.

England 171 (Eoin Morgan 38 (23), Jos Buttler 54 (28); Kyle Abbott3 for 26, Imran Tahir 1 for 25 ) vs South Africa
