Australia are in command at lunch having reduced New Zealand to 84 for 5 at lunch on Day One of the first Test against New Zealand as Josh Hazlewood and Peter Siddle managed to rip the hosts’ top-order apart after their magnificent spells of fast bowling. New Zealand looked to be positive right from the outset with their openers Martin Guptill and Tom Latham striking a couple of boundaries early on. Latham could not last long as he was caught behind for six off Hazlewood The decision had to be verturned by the third umpire after the on-field umpire adjudged that not out. Kane Williamson then joined Guptill. The duo seemed to be in good nick before Guptill hit one to Steven Smith at first slip and fell for run-a-ball 18. They will look to break the unbeaten 33-run stand between Watling and Anderson and dismiss New Zealand in the second session.

For New Zealand, Nicholls gets his first Test cap after impressing in the the limited-overs fixtures. He takes Ross Taylor’s place in side, who is still not fit.
