The Jharkhand State Cricket Association has appealed to the state governor to waive taxes after the Commercial Tax Department issued a letter asking it to pay entertainment tax on the earnings made through the India-England ODI held on January 19 in Ranchi.
“I have met Jharkhand Governor Syed Ahmed to apprise him of the matter and appealed him to initiate steps to waive the taxes as President’s rule is in force in the state,” JSCA Secretary Rajesh Verma said on Sunday.
“We have also responded to the CTD letter and urged its commissioner to waive the tax on the 3rd match of India-England ODI series organised at the JSCA stadium,” Verma said.
Verma said JSCA did not have any source of income and had been promoting cricket in the state with the money earned through such tournaments.
“We have sent a letter to JSCA recently and asked them to pay the entertainment tax on the earnings made through the ODI,” Joint Commissioner of the Commercial Tax Department, Jamshedpur Division, Ranjan Kumar Sinha said.
The department would be forced to initiate legal action against the state cricket body if it failed to comply with the directive soon, Sinha said.
Asked about the volume of the entertainment tax to be paid by JSCA, he said it was 10 per cent of the total collection of the ODI.
