The dismissal of KL Rahul during the first Test between India and Australia has given rise to a lot of controversy. The batter was visibly upset as he got dismissed by Mitchell Starc on the call of third umpire. Rahul received a goof-length ball from Starc that looked like it travelled to the wicketkeeper. Australia did not take much time to ask for a review, where the third umpire was handed the rope to assess the situation.

Replays from the Snickometer showed a spike that would come in case of an edge, but the images were not clear. It could not be determine whether the noise was made by the bat striking the bad or brushing against the ball. The side replay could only show this much information, and the decision became even more difficult as there was no front view available. Rahul was declared out by the third umpire at the end.

Former Indian cricketer and 2007 T20 World Cup winning wicketkeeper batter Robin Uthappa got extremely furious on this incident, as he went on to social media and expressed his views criticising the decision of the umpires.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations state that in order to overturn an umpire’s on-field judgement, there needs to be solid evidence. In case of KL Rahul, it looked like there was no solid proof. After the declaration of Rahul being out, broadcasters were actually able to display another angle, which surprisingly was from the bowler’s side. However, even in that clip it could not be determined if Rahul had hit the ball or not.
