Kapil Dev’s coach Desh Prem Azad cremated today

Dronacharya awardee Desh Prem Azad, coach of legendary cricketer Kapil Dev, was cremated in Chandigarh on Saturday in the presence of a large number of sportspersons and administrators.

Azad died after a brief illness in a hospital at Mohali on Friday and his elder son Sanjeev lit the pyre.

Besides former India captain Kapil Dev, another Azad’s student Chetan Sharma, Punjab Cricket Secretary (PCA) Secretary MP Pandove, Patron of Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) Rajan Kashyap, former Railway Minister and local MP, Pawan Bansal were also present.

Azad, who remained Kapil’s coach till the early 1970s, was 75. He is survived by a wife and two sons.

He was currently holding the post of director, non-residential cricket academies of PCA.
