Exiled England batsman Kevin Pietersen has revealed that he is in talks with English domestic side Surrey in order to play in the next season of the County Championship and boost his chances of a place in the England team.
The South Africa-born batsman, who made his international debut for England in 2004, made the announcement at the Guildford Book Festival, where he was present to promote his recently released autobiography titled KP: The Autobiography, which has been a source of a major controversy in the recent weeks.
“My knee needed a rest as I have struggled for the last 18 months,” he said, responding to a question from the audience at the Mandolay Hotel on why he had not played a fuller role for his latest county this summer.
“It was a bit of a blessing in disguise that I have had this last nine months,” he added. “That was a reason I just played T20.
“But now I am going to sit down with Surrey and we have started talking. I just need to think which direction I want to go in. Clearly if I want to play for England again, I am going to have to play four day cricket.”,” Pietersen was quoted as saying according to getsurrey.co.uk. Pietersen had scored an unbeaten 234 for Surrey against Lancashire in 2012.
Pietersen created a furore in the media after his revelations on the ‘bullying culture’ that existed in the England dressing room and lashed out at players and staff members such as Graeme Swann, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Andy Flower, etc for the same. This resulted in his ties with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) getting worse and his chances of returning to the England squad getting slimmer with each passing day.
