Craig Kieswetter slammed 61 and Eoin Morgan 45 as England reached 229 for eight from 32 overs against Sri Lanka in the rain-truncated first One-Day International match at Kennington Oval in London.

Lasith Malinga provided Sri Lanka early momentum by dismissing England captain Alastair Cook for five, but a quickfire 47-run partnership for the second wicket between Kieswetter and Jonathan Trott revived England.

Trott hit five boundaries for his 23 off 25 balls and was dismissed by Suranga Lakmal. Kieswetter and Kevin Pietersen then added 56 for the third wicket, which set a solid platform for England to set a big score.

Morgan missed on a half-century when he was dismissed on 45, which came off 35 balls studded with six boundaries.

Kieswetter’s 61 came off 56 balls with the help of four boundaries and two sixes.

Tim Bresnan too chipped in with the bat getting 23 runs off 14 balls with the help of four boundaries which took England past 200.

Sri Lanka skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan won the toss and chose to field.

Brief Scores: England 229 for 8 in 32 overs (Craig Kieswetter 61, Eoin Morgan 45; Lasith Malinga 3 for 40, Suranga Lakmal 2 for 52) vs Sri Lanka
