Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) have managed to post 161 for 6 in their 20 overs in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016 match against Gujarat Lions (GL) at Mohali. They got off to a good start courtesy of some excellent hitting by openers Murali Vijay and Manan Vohra. Vohra was the first man dismissed after he was cleverly caught behind off the bowling if Ravindra Jadeja for 38. Vijay and Vohra put on 78 for the first wicket off just 50 deliveries. KXIP lost a couple of wickets in quick succession in the form of Glenn Maxwell and David Miller. Both were dismissed off full deliveries by Dwayne Bravo. With the wicket of Miller, Bravo became the first player to pick up 300 T20 wickets. He overtook Lasith Malinga to become the leading wicket-taker in T20s. Marcus Stoinis and Wriddhiman Saha looked to add some stability in the innings. Stoinis was the one looking to go after the bowling and Saha was giving him good support at the other end. Saha was not able to get his timing right and as a result his strike rate remained well under 100 throughout his innings. Stoinis did not find it difficult to get going as he was striking the well very well in the latter stages of the innings. He was put out of his misery as he was dismissed in the final over of the innings. Nevertheless, he was involved in a 55-run stand with Stoinis off 45 balls. Stoinis was dismissed off the very next ball for 33 and that gave Bravo a chance to pick up a hat-trick. Akshar Patel managed to dig the hat-trick ball out. Bravo had the chance to pick his fifth wicket, but Sarabjeet Ladda dropped a catch in the deep that denied him a chance to register his maiden fifer in IPL.
Earlier, Suresh Raina had won the toss and elected to bowl first. This is their first match in IPL history after they were drafted as one of the two new teams in the IPL. The other team were Rising Pune Supergiants, who opened their account with a win over defending champions Mumbai Indians in the first match of the tournament. KXIP missed Shaun Marsh for this game as he was admitted to a local hospital with food poisoning. GL will be happy to have restricted KXIP to this total as they were staring at a total of around 180 at one stage.
