Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) registered a four wicket win over Barbados Tridents in the fifth match of the ongoing Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) 2014 series. KXIP chased down the target of 175 with 19.4 overs to spare with David Miller hitting the winning runs off the bowling of Ravi Rampaul.

KXIP skipper George Bailey had earlier put the Tridents to bat after winning the toss. Munaweera had rallied with wicket-keeper batsman William Perkins to get the only Caribbean side of the tournament off to a spanking start, Before the start of Awana’s over, the Tridents were comfortably perched at 54 for no loss off five overs. Awana then walked in with the ball and changed the course of the match with two strikes off the first and the last deliveries of the sixth over.

The Tridents then went on to lose a flurry of wickets in the middle overs as KXIP had successfully managed to ebb the flow of runs that were leaking like a faucet in the early overs. The duo of Awana and Thisara Perera were the primary wicket-takers during these overs. It was Raymon Reifer’s powerful hitting that propelled the Tridents towards the commanding total.

Barbados Tridents posted 174 for the loss of six wickets against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the fifth match of the ongoing Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) 2014 being held at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Saturday. Reifer and Ashley Nurse were batting at the crease at scores of 60 and 8 respectively when the Barbadian innings came to a close.

The KXIP innings began on a whirlwind note as the opening duo of Virender Sehwag and Manan Vohra guided them to a commanding position of 36 for no loss after three overs. Manan Vohra led the charge as he kept the runs flowing, hitting three fours and and six in his 19 ball innings of 27 runs. He was the first to depart when he  skied a short-pitched delivery off Ravi Rampaul which was caught by Jonathan Carter in the mid-wicket to leave Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at 41 for the loss of one wicket.

His dismissal led to a sudden flurry of wickets as the Tridents suddenly seemed to have wrested the control of the game back in their favour. The chief destroyers were Rampaul and Jeevan Mendis, the latter of whom dismissed the likes of Sehwag and skipper George Bailey. As the crowd went silent at a score of 131 for six, it was upto Miller and Akshar Patel to rescue their side and make the evening for the locals a special one.

Miller’s innings was studded with three fours and two sixes and he recieved able support from Patel, who hit 23 from nine deliveries, including three boundaries and a six, as the duo added 47 runs from 19 balls to take their side home. The icing on the cake was Miller’s six over wide long-off off the bowling of Jason Holder.

KXIP have now won two games in a row and stand a good chance of qualifying for the semi finals of the tournament. For the Barbados Tridents, the remaining games in the group stage will be crucial and another loss could very well mean elimination.
