STAR batters KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are on road to recovery from their respective injury. However, their spot in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 is still a topic of discussion due to the 50-over format of the tournament.
The latest BCCI update didn’t determine the date of the potential return of the star duo. Rahul underwent thigh surgery while Iyer had surgery on his lower back to cure a stress fracture.
“It is unlikely that both Rahul and Shreyas would be match fit for 50-over cricket and that too in humid conditions in Sri Lanka. But BCCI medical team feels that Rahul can at least get fit before the three-match series against Australia before the World Cup,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
“In case of Iyer, he has also started skills training but World Cup for him will be touch and go if Indian management thinks of putting a 100 percent fit Iyer back on the park. T20 is an easier vehicle for comeback unlike 50-over cricket. We are keeping fingers crossed,” the source added.
KL Rahul has started wicketkeeping drills but doing that for the whole 50 overs will be a tough task after fresh hamstring surgery.
Jasprit Bumrah’s Return Good For India Ahead Of Asia Cup 2023
Fast-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is set to make a comeback into international cricket after being named as India’s captain for the three-match T20I series against Ireland. In the squad, fast-bowler Prasidh Krishna also makes a return to the team.
The three T20I matches between India and Ireland will be played in Malahide on August 18, 20 and 23. India and Ireland played a two-match T20I series in June 2022, with the visitors winning the series 2-0, though the hosts came close to winning.
For the tour of Ireland, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, and Shahbaz Ahmed have also been included, with Ruturaj Gaikwad appointed as vice-captain of the side.
