Shashi Tharoor on Monday listed bringing of Indian Premier League team (IPL) for Kerala as one of his achievements.
His short 11-month stint as Union Minister of State for External Affairs came to an end after he was embroiled in a controversy with then IPL chairman Lalit Modi over the ownership of the Kochi IPL team.
Earlier, Tharoor was allegedly targeted by Modi for having instructed him not to reveal identities of the stakeholders of Kochi IPL franchisee.
Modi had sent out a tweet against Tharoor saying that the minister had asked him not to probe into who are behind the Rendezvous Sports World group, owners of the Kochi team. He also went on to reveal the details of the different partners and their stake in the Kochi team.
Meanwhile, the IPL governing council suspended the Kochi franchise for non-payment of bank guarantee.
The consortium, which was mired in a bitter ownership dispute after its very inception, defaulted on a Rs 156 crore annual payment it was to make as bank guarantee despite reported reminders from the IPL authorities.
“Because of the irremediable breach committed by the Kochi franchise, the BCCI has decided to encash the bank guarantee in their possession and also terminate the franchise,” said new BCCI President N Srinivasan.
Asked if the BCCI would reconsider its decision and give the franchise a chance to return, Srinivasan bluntly rejected such a suggestion.
“No, we have terminated the franchise because the breach is not capable of being remedied,” he clarified.
The franchise, which was bought for Rs 1,550 crore made its maiden foray in fourth season of IPL.
