West Indies declared at 484 for 7 on Day 3 of the first Test match against Bangladesh Needing to accelerate the scoring considerably following pedestrian progress on the rain-affected second day, the West Indies batsmen displayed greater adventure, which proved beneficial for Taijul Islam, who reaped significant rewards for his perseverance.
He took three of the four wickets to fall to finish with five for 135 off 47 overs by the time the declaration came after 80 minutes’ play.
Taijul began by removing obdurate opener Kraigg Brathwaite to a top-edged sweep to short fine-leg, the 21-year-old’s marathon innings of 212 coming to an end after 554 minutes at the crease.
West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin came to the crease with the clear intent of pushing the score along, however a miscued heave resulted in a well-judged catch by Rubel Hossain at midwicket while Jerome Taylor swung a full-toss to Shuvagata Hom at long-on to complete Taijul’s five-wicket haul.
Rubel had earlier claimed his first wicket of the innings at the Arnos Vale Stadium, the fast-medium bowler trapping Jermaine Blackwood leg-before as he also attempted to pick up the pace following the separation of the fourth-wicket pair of Brathwaite and Chanderpaul, whose combined effort had realised 161 runs.
Following his painfully slow scoring in crawling to 51 off 177 deliveries by stumps on the second day, the 40-year-old left-hander finally displayed greater urgency, although it was not quick enough to get him to a 30th Test hundred before Ramdin declared.
He did enjoy a moment of considerable good fortune on 74 as wicketkeeper and captain Mushfiqur Rahim missed a straightforward stumping chance off Taijul. In over five hours at the crease, Chanderpaul stroked six fours off 226 balls.
