Former Indian cricket administrator Lalit Modi, who served the BCCI in capacity of vice president, Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) as its president and is also acknowledged as the founder and architect of the Indian Premier League (IPL), got a major relief when the International Criminal Police Organization, or INTERPOL, rejected India s request for issuing a red notice against him. This means that INTERPOL will not arrest him in relation to Indian governments request for his extradition. This has come as a major relief to Modi, who has been a fugitive, residing in London, United Kingdom (UK) after serious charges of misconduct, indiscipline and financial irregularities being levelled against him.

It is notable here that Modi was suspended from BCCI after IPL 2010, as the board found him guilty of being involved in wrongdoings. BCCI launched an investigation against him, and banned him for life in 2013 after a committee found him guilty of serious charges like financial irregularities in the functioning of the cash-rich tournament. Modi denied any wrongdoing, and blamed accusations on political rivalries. Shortly before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched an investigation against him for alleged financial irregularities, Modi moved to London. The Government of India revoked his passport in 2010, but the decision was overturned by the High Court in 2014.

An elated Modi took to his social media accounts on Instagram and Twitter to share his happiness with his followers. He wrote:

I just got off from a flight from #barcelona thru which I sat completely #numb. Just as I was boarding the flight I got the #news that interpol had finally #investigated and concluded and reached a #verdict in my favour with a detailed letter of #rejection Of #india’s request for issuing of a #rednotice. The #sword that was #hanging over my #head had suddenly gone. At first I did know what to do or say. I Just forwarded the notice to a few people who were either involved, supported or were well wishers without a word from me. The flight was on the runway. I shut the phone. And the whole flight I sat completely numb overcoming with so many emotions and a sense of #anger at first and then a greater #sense of #gratitude. I had finally achieved the #mantra – “that this shall pass too”. I had always in my #heart known #truth will Prevail. But never in my wildest #dream think it would be so soon. I am just so thankful to my immediate #family and friends and well wishers for being there and want to say thank you for standing by me. I now can peacefully chart my next step in life. Thank you. are over and new chapter ready to begin. It’s been 6 years 9 months and 12 days to this day and now ready for a new beginning.

Modi also shared the No Objection Certificate (NOC) received from the INTERPOL on Twitter, later sharing the letters he received:

Some time back, the former IPL commissioner and his family had applied for citizenship in Saint Lucia under its investment scheme in the Caribbean as it is said to be a tax haven. At present, Modi has various cases pending against him in the Indian courts. The ED is currently probing him for various money laundering activities during his time at the helm of affairs in IPL. The Indian government is trying its best to get Modi extradited to India to try him in an Indian court, however, this latest move by INTERPOL has come as a huge setback to those efforts.
