Lasith Malinga has revealed that he would captain Sri Lanka in the ICC World T20 2014 final against India at Mirpur even if regular T20 skipper Dinesh Chandimal plays. Chandimal had opted out of the semi-final and Malinga had captained in his place. For the pre-final photo-call with the trophy, Malinga came and posed with India counterpart MS Dhoni. Thus, it is quite clear that Malinga would captain. But, he says that Chandimal has a chance to play the final.

“He is a good captain and we know he is a good player. We will see the wicket and decide. Chandimal has a chance to play,” Malinga told reporters on the eve of the final.

When asked what would happen if Chandimal plays and who would lead the side, Malinga said, “Myself!”

Sri Lanka had beaten India in the practice game before the tournament, but Malinga said that it won’t have a bearing. “Practice game is a practice game. Playing in the tournament is different,” Malinga said.

“Everyone is looking forward to do their job 100 per cent. We won the Asia Cup 2014 and we have played for some time in Bangladesh,” Malinga said.

Sri Lanka Cricket has also announced a sum of money for the players if they win, but that isn’t an extra motivation for Malinga. “Never mind the money. We want to go out there and play our brand of cricket.”
