Not unexpectedly, Samiullah Shenwari wins the man of the match.
Live Score: Afghanistan 211/9 | Overs 49.3
BATTING: Shapoor Zadran 12 (10) Hamid Hassan 15 (39)
Single of the first ball, a yorker. Mix up in the second delivery, Shapoor Zadran is saved because of a miss-aimed throw. And four of the third ball! Brilliant match! Afghanistan’s first World Cup win, this and what a heroic win too.
Live Score: Afghanistan 206/9 | Overs 49
BATTING: Shapoor Zadran 8 (8) Hamid Hassan 14 (38)
Single off the first ball to square leg. Another single off the second ball. Another single off the third ball as they bring up the team 200. Intense match. A crucial dot squeezed in. Leg bye run the next ball. And then a wide by Berrington.
Live Score: Afghanistan 197/9 | Overs 48
BATTING: Shapoor Zadran 2 (5) Hamid Hassan 13 (35)
Pressure mounting on Afghanistan. But the tail-enders are in no mood to simply give in, they’re playing sensible cricket. Samiullah Shenwari sits distraught in the dug-out and is yet to take off his helmet.
Live Score: Afghanistan 192/9 | Overs 47
BATTING: Shapoor Zadran 0 (1) Hamid Hassan 11 (33)
And a three of sixes from that over from the bat of Shenwari. And he goes for one shot too many and finds the fielder at midwicket. There was a delay as there was doubt as to number of fielders standing outside the inner ring, but it’s fine and Shenwari has to walk back a dejected man. This match has been scintillating.
OUT! Samiullah Shenwari 96 (147) c Davey b Haq
Live Score: Afghanistan 173/8 | Overs 46
BATTING: Samiullah Shenwari 75 (137) Hamid Hassan 10 (29)
This match is getting increasingly gripping. The favour is still with Scotland but Afghanistan have fought tooth and nail. A few lusty blows could change the fortunes for Afghanistan. 38 needed off 24.
Live Score: Afghanistan 161/8 | Overs 43
BATTING: Samiullah Shenwari 74 (134) Hamid Hassan 3 (23)
Scotland have still not managed to completely seal victory even though the advantage remains with them. Samiullah Shenwari is fighting hard and smashed a lusty blow of Majid Haq.
Live Score: Afghanistan 154/8 | Overs 41
BATTING: Samiullah Shenwari 67 (127) Hamid Hassan 3 (18)
The required rate is mounting a little bit and at this stage that could result in a lot of added pressure. Samiullah Shenwari has really fought brave and hard but a win still feels like a remote possibility.
Live Score: Afghanistan 148/8 | Overs 39
BATTING: Samiullah Shenwari 64 (121) Hamid Hassan 0 (12)
Shenwari decides to break loose a little and smashes the first ball of Davey’s over for a huge six. The next ball he hit to point for a four. He has put up a brave fight and if he can win it from here, it would be truly heroic.
Live Score: Afghanistan 136/8 | Overs 37
BATTING: Samiullah Shenwari 52 (114) Hamid Hassan 0 (7)
And Samiullah Shenwari brings up his ninth ODI half-century but it doesn’t seem likely that this could bring a positive result for his team. The task at hand is extremely difficult. Required run-rate is about 6 now and just two wickets remain.
Live Score: Afghanistan 132/8 | Overs 35
BATTING: Samiullah Shenwari 48 (109)
And just when Scotland would’ve started worrying a little bit about this partnership, Dawlat Zadran skies one and finds the hands of skipper Preston Mommsen take a good catch and he walks back. What can Samiullah Shenwari do now?
OUT! Dawlat Zadran 9 (25) c Mommsen b Berrington
Live Score: Afghanistan 117/7 | Overs 32
BATTING: Samiullah Shenwari 40 (98) Dawlat Zadran 2 (18)
These two are trying to put up a bit of a fight. Samiullah Shenwari is putting the bad balls away, while Dawlat Zadran is supporting him quite well with some good defensive strokes. An Afghanistan win still looks like a remote possibility.
Live Score: Afghanistan 105/7 | Overs 29
BATTING: Samiullah Shenwari 29 (84) Dawlat Zadran 2 (14)
Afghanistan may have gone past the hundred run-mark but it is advantage Scotland nonetheless. Samiullah Shenwari will have to stay till the end if Afghanistan are to win this.
Live Score: Afghanistan 97/7 | Overs 24
BATTING: Samiullah Shenwari 24 (65) Dawlat Zadran 0 (2)
Wickets are falling faster then runs are coming. This time it’s Josh Davey who comes to the party and gets the wicket with a bouncer which Gulbadin Naib tries to hook but finds the hand of Haq. Not quite because Haq has to actually run and cover some ground and get his hands to find the ball and takes a tough catch. Afghanistan in misery.
OUT! Gulbadin Naib 0 (1) c Haq b Davey
Live Score: Afghanistan 96/6 | Overs 23
BATTING: Samiullah Shenwari 21 (55)
And wickets are falling in a heap. The Scots can pull out their bagpipers and start celebrating now. Berrington procures the edge and Zadran manages a edge to Majid Haq which he doesn’t mess up this time
OUT! Najibullah Zadran 4 (5) c Haq b Berrington
Live Score: Afghanistan 89/5 | Overs 21
BATTING: Samiullah Shenwari 21 (55)
And another bites the dust! Afsar Zazai out for a golden duck. Richie Berrington procured Samiullah Shenwari’s edge the first ball but it was dropped. But he made up for the damage by trapping Zazai right in front. READ: Mohammad Nabi’s dismissal report
OUT! Afsar Zazai 0 (1) lbw Berrington
Live Score: Afghanistan 88/4 | Overs 20
BATTING: Samiullah Shenwari 20 (50)
And now Mohammad Nabi has to make the walk back to the pavillion. Scotland are all over them now. The ball hit him on the pad and after a long call the umpire raised the finger. Nabi reviewed and replays show it was just about clipping leg-stump. Now, Afghanistan in deep soup.
OUT! Mohammad Nabi 1 (3) lbw Josh Davey
Live Score: Afghanistan 87/3 | Overs 19
BATTING: Mohammad Nabi 1 (2) Samiullah Shenwari 19 (45)
And Richie Berrington strikes gold with the wicket of Javed Ahmadi who was simply sailing away. A good knock by him indeed, but he would’ve wanted to get a century. Can Scotland right back in here? They sure can.
OUT! Javed Ahmadi 51 (50) c Machan b Berrington
Live Score: Afghanistan 85/2 | Overs 18
BATTING: Javed Ahmadi 51 (50) Samiullah Shenwari 18 (42)
And Javed Ahmadi brings up a well-deserved half-century and if he decides to stay put, he could even eye the three figures. He’s being well supported by Shenwari. Afghanistan are cruising at the moment. READ: Javed Ahmadi’s half century report
Live Score: Afghanistan 70/2 | Overs 15
BATTING: Javed Ahmadi 42 (43) Samiullah Shenwari 12 (31)
Javed Ahmadi and Samiullah Shenwari have slowed down the run scoring after the double strike but they don’t need to worry, they can take all their time. Ahmadi is inching towards a half-century.
Live Score: Afghanistan 62/2 | Overs 13
BATTING: Javed Ahmadi 40 (41) Samiullah Shenwari 7 (21)
Afghanistan may have lost two wickets but they’re quite comfortable. Samiullah Shenwari hit a authoritative boundary through deep cover point for a four and that may give him some confidence. Scotland need to strike regularly while also keeping the run flow in check.
Live Score: Afghanistan 55/2 | Overs 11
BATTING: Javed Ahmadi 39 (40) Samiullah Shenwari 2 (10)
So no more wickets after that Alasdair Evans burst and to have a chance of winning this Scotland will have to strike regularly or Ahmadi will snatch the game before they know what struck them. Samiullah Shenwari is a little vulnerable and bowlers must not let him get away.
Live Score: Afghanistan 46/2 | Overs 8
BATTING: Javed Ahmadi 33 (32)
And Mangal is out! He was looking a bit rusty and was struggling, and he’s been bowled by Alasdair Evans. Ahmadi at the other end has been very steady, but gave a half chance to fine leg of a miscued hook shot who came running in, covered a lot of distance but just couldn’t hold on or he’d be a big wicket as he’s been devouring the attack. Stanikzai comes out and takes as aggressive a stand smashing a boundary through covers. And he’s edged it to slips the very next ball.
OUT! Nawroz Mangal 7 (13) b Evans
OUT! Asghar Stanikzai 4 (3) c Cross b Evans
Live Score: Afghanistan 27/0 | Overs 5
BATTING: Javed Ahmadi 23 (24) Nawroz Mangal 3 (6)
First ball gives Mommsen a half chance at slips to get the first wicket but he cant hold on to it. Next ball is short and is pulled to midwicket for three runs. Mangal gets a single off the fifth ball to bring up his 1000th One-Day International run. Ahmadi drills the next ball to four in celebration.
Live Score: Afghanistan 18/0 | Overs 4
BATTING: Javed Ahmadi 16 (22) Nawroz Mangal 1 (2)
Javed Ahmadi wants to cut loose but Davey isn’t giving him the room. So the next ball Ahmadi steps out and hits him over the in-field for four. And he gets width the next ball and slams it through point for four. He’s in no mood to dawdle about this total.
Live Score: Afghanistan 10/0 | Overs 3
BATTING: Javed Ahmadi 8 (16) Nawroz Mangal 1 (2)
Afghanistan are off to a slightly slowish start but they’re chasing a small target and they don’t have to worry much about the run rate as long as they preserve wickets. Powerful shot for four through point by Ahmadi off the third ball.
Live Score: Afghanistan 1/0 | Overs 1
BATTING: Javed Ahmadi 1 (6) Nawroz Mangal 0 (0)
And a maiden over to begin the proceedings. Ian Wardlaw lacks in pace but with movement can create good amount of movement to trouble the batsmen. Single run of the last ball, one run off that over.
Live Score: Scotland 210 | Overs 50
Batting: Ian Wardlaw 1 (4)
And Scotland’s tail-enders make a strong comeback to push beyond the 200-run mark. Majid Haq got 31 runs while Alasdair Evans accumalated 28 runs. Whether this total is substantial to create troubles remains to be seen. Shapoor Zadran was the star for Afghanistan with the ball and picked four wickets.
OUT! Alasdair Evans 28 (37) c Nabi b Shapoor Zadran
Live Score: Scotland 134/7 | Overs 33
Batting: Majid Haq 0 (1) Richie Berrington 3 (7)
The Scottish batsmen are getting into a bad habit of simply throwing their wickets away with needlessly aggressive shots. Their loss of wickets is quite absurd. These two need to build a solid partnership or the match may be a cakewalk for Afghanistan.
OUT! Josh Davey 1 (9) c Hassan b Shapoor Zadran
Live Score: Scotland 132/6 | Overs 31
Batting: Josh Davey 2 (5) Richie Berrington 3 (7)
Shapoor Zadran makes the breakthrough. Gets movement of the seam, Cross edges and the keeper gets it with the tip of his fingers. The problem with Scotland is they lose a couple of wickets each time they’re looking to get settled. Thirty six run partnership is undone. Josh Davey is the next man in and Scotland will hope he sticks around since they don’t have great batsmen after that.
OUT! Matthew Cross 15 (26) c Zazai b Shapoor Zadran
Live Score: Scotland 96/5 | Overs 23
Batting: Matthew Cross 1 (2) Richie Berrington 2 (6)
First ballmisses the outside edge. The second ball doesn’t! Another wicket! Naib bowled beautifully to the right hander and has been rewarded. He’s getting good away swing to the right hander. Fourth ball yields a single.
OUT! Preston Mommsen 23 (36) c Zazai b Naib
Live Score: Scotland 95/4 | Overs 22
Batting: Preston Mommsen 23 (34) Richie Berrington 2 (4)
First ball is a dot. In the second ball from Nabi, Machan goes for yet another heave and misses again but this time the ball is at the stumps. He’s bowled. Poor way to lose your wicket when you were going so well. Final ball is guided to fine leg for a couple.
OUT! Matt Machan 31 (28) b Nabi
Live Score: Scotland 92/3 | Overs 21
Batting: Preston Mommsen 22 (34) Matt Machan 31 (27)
First ball from Naib is punched to deep point for a couple. Second ball is also wide outside off and Machan misses as he attempts a big heave. Fourth ball is hit above the off side in-field for a single.
Live Score: Scotland 88/3 | Overs 20
Batting: Preston Mommsen 21 (31) Matt Machan 28 (23)
First ball yields a couple. Fourth ball, after a couple of dots, is guided to long on for a single. Just three runs of that over.
Live Score: Scotland 85/3 | Overs 19
Batting: Preston Mommsen 21 (29) Matt Machan 25 (19)
First ball is hit for four. Second ball is guided to third man for a single. Fourth ball is hit through covers for a boundary. Next ball yields a single. Final ball is guided to third amn for a single. 11 off that over.
Live Score: Scotland 74/3 | Overs 18
Batting: Preston Mommsen 16 (26) Matt Machan 18 (16)
Nabi brings himself into the attack. First ball is good length, nice and straight and blocked. Similar in the next ball. Gets innovative the third ball and sweeps the ball to fine leg for a single. Dot next ball. Next ball guided to long off for a single.
Live Score: Scotland 72/3 | Overs 17
Batting: Preston Mommsen 15 (23) Matt Machan 18 (16)
A non-threatening line wide of off by Dawlat which Machan is happy to leave. Fourth ball was outside off and full length and it was hit through covers for four. Much better line and length the next ball, gets the edge, but falls safe and races for another four.
Live Score: Scotland 64/3 | Overs 16
Batting: Preston Mommsen 15 (23) Matt Machan 10 (7)
First ball, full length outside off. Nicely worked by Machan to the deep backward point boundary for four. Next ball, is hit to third man for a single. A few solid defense strokes by Mommsen the next four balls.
Live Score: Scotland 59/3 | Overs 15
Batting: Preston Mommsen 15 (19) Matt Machan 5 (5)
Gulbadin Naib into the attack. Second ball is a tempting full length ball outside off which the batsman attack but the ball swings in and almost clips the stumps. Next ball is short and is pulled to the mid-wicket boundary by Mommsen. Just the four of that over.
Live Score: Scotland 55/3 | Overs 14
Batting: Preston Mommsen 11 (13) Matt Machan 5 (5)
First ball is emphatically driven through covers for four. Second ball is nudged to the vacant square leg for a quick couple. Good running. Next three balls are dots. Last ball is a leg bye. Seven of that over.
Live Score: Scotland 48/3 | Overs 13
Batting: Preston Mommsen 5 (7) Matt Machan 5 (5)
The Scottish batsmen showed intent despite the loss of three early wickets. Machan seems to be in good nick but he must be careful to not lose his wicket to the movement bowlers are getting. Four runs of that over.
Live Score: Scotland 44/3 | Overs 12
Batting: Preston Mommsen 4 (5) Matt Machan 2 (1)
And another wicket has fallen and this time Afghanistan can celebrate with twice as much zest since it is the man in form, Kyle Coetzer who has been bowled. Second wicket for Dawlat Zadran there. The Afghani bowlers have caused plenty of trouble. Last ball had width on offer and Mommsen cut it to point for a boundary.
OUT! Kyle Coetzer 25 (39) b Dawlat Zadran
Live Score: Scotland 40/2 | Overs 11
Batting: Kyle Coetzer 25 (38) Matt Machan 2 (1)
Hamid Hassan is getting menacing movement off the pitch and a little in the air too. There was a close lbw call but umpire gave it not out rightfully as the batsman got an inside edge. But two balls later, Hassan got his man. Hamish Gardiner looked to be getting some form in the previous over but couldn’t deal with Hassan’s movement. Gets off the mark in the first ball; tucking the ball through leg side.
Hamish Gardiner 5 (20) lbw Hassan
Live Score: Scotland 38/1 | Overs 10
Batting: Kyle Coetzer 25 (38) Hamish Gardiner 5 (15)
Hamish Gardiner seems to be growing more comfortable. Got three runs in that over and even hit a confident shot. Five runs from that over. Zadran needs to rectify his lengths which are going awry.
Live Score: Scotland 33/1 | Overs 9
Batting: Kyle Coetzer 25 (38) Hamish Gardiner 2 (11)
It’s been a balanced start so far. Afghanistan have picked a wicket and have tied the batsmen down a little but Coetzer is in sublime form and is negotiating the swing very well. Hamish Gardiner has been circumspect but if he goes on Scotland will be in a good position.
Live Score: Scotland 7/1 | Overs 2
Batting: Kyle Coetzer 1 (7)
FOUR! First boundary of the innings, but off the pads. Down to the fine leg fence. Not the most auspicious beginning for Dawlat Zadran as he drifts on the pads of Coetzer first ball and pays the price. DOT. Another leg bye. This time just for one run. WIDE. Far from ideal this from Dawlat. Dot ball, that’s more the line his captain would like him to bowl. Dot ball, a shot that’s gone out of vogue, good old fashioned leave. WICKET! Afghanistan draw first blood after an indifferent first five balls.
OUT! Calum MacLeod 0 (5) C Najibullah B Dawlat Zadran
Live Score: Scotland 1/0 | Overs 1
Batting: Kyle Coetzer 1 (4), Calum MacLeod 0 (2)
Shapoor starts with three dot balls before conceding a single of the fourth delivery. Another couple of dot balls to Macleod do conclude the first over. A tight over but unthreatening. Afghanistan must strive for early wickets now that they’ve inserted Scotland into bat considering the trend in the tournament so far. Sides batting first have had an overwhelming advantage.
Teams:
Afghanistan: Mohammad Nabi (c), Nawroz Mangal, Asghar Stanikzai, Samiullah Shenwari, Afsar Zazai (wk), Najibullah Zadran, Gulbadin Naib, Hamid Hassan, Shapoor Zadran, Dawlat Zadran, Javed Ahmadi
Scotland: Preston Mommsen (c), Kyle Coetzer, Richie Berrington, Matthew Cross, Josh Davey, Alasdair Evans, Majid Haq, Matt Machan, Calum MacLeod, Hamish Gardiner, Iain Wardlaw.
Toss: Afghanistan have elected to bowl
Hello and Welcome to CricketCountry’s coverage of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Pool A match 17 between Afghanistan and Scotland at the University Oval in Dunedin. I am Rishad D’Souza and i will bring all the live updates from this match. Live Scorecard: Afghanistan vs Scotland ICC Cricket World Cup 2015
A lot has been written about the need for inclusive ICC World Cups in the future, in the light of the International Cricket Council’s draconian decision to reduce the number of Associate participants in subsequent ICC World Cups, but the onus lies on teams like Afghanistan and Scotland to ensure that they make a solid case for their inclusion. Both Afghanistan and Scotland have a win-less record at World Cups, although this match against Scotland is only Afghanistan’s third World Cup game. ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: POINTS TABLE
Afghanistan gave a fair account of their abilities in the previous match against Sri Lanka which was tightly contested. Afghanistan’s pace bowling attack has stood out amongst all Associate nations. The trinity of Dawlat Zadran, Shapoor Zadran and Hamid Hassan is a force to reckon with. Their batting needs to rise to the occasion, if they are to translate potential into meaningful results. ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: SCHEDULE & MATCH DETAILS
Scotland on the other hand have been inconsistent with the ball and bat. The two facets of their game haven’t clicked in tandem yet. In fact their batting has left a lot to desire. They haven’t managed a score of 200 in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 yet. While their bowling was impressive in the match against new Zealand, the same bowlers trembled under the assault of Moeen Ali in the previous match. Both Afghanistan and Scotland would have acclimatised by now, and the fact that both teams have played a game each at the university Oval at Dunedin adds an interesting dimension to the contest. ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: Complete Coverage
Squads:
Scotland: Preston Mommsen (c), Kyle Coetzer, Richie Berrington, Frederick Coleman, Matthew Cross, Josh Davey, Alasdair Evans, Hamish Gardiner, Majid Haq, Michael Leask, Matt Machan, Calum MacLeod, Safyaan Sharif, Robert Taylor, Iain Wardlaw.
Afghanistan: Mohammad Nabi (c), Nawroz Mangal, Asghar Stanikzai, Samiullah Shenwari, Afsar Zazai (wk), Najibullah Zadran, Nasir Jamal, Mirwais Ashraf, Gulbadin Naib, Hamid Hassan, Shapoor Zadran, Dawlat Zadran, Aftab Alam, Javed Ahmadi, Usman Ghani
