Sri Lanka restricted Australia to 231 in the third One-Day International match of the tri-series at the WACA Ground in Perth on Friday.
After opting to bowl first, Sri Lanka did not allow Australian batsmen to free up their arms and kept striking at regular intervals.
Australia were jolted early by Nuwan Kulasekara when he had Matthew Wade caught by Kumar Sangakkara for one, and Lasith Malinga soon added more to Australian woes sending back Ricky Ponting for one.
Skipper Michael Clarke teamed up with senior pro Michael Hussey to bail his side out of trouble, as they added 31 runs for the fourth wicket.
Clarke then went on to add 49 runs for the fifth wicket with David Hussey (27) and 56 runs for the sixth with Daniel Christian, which pushed Australia past 200.
Clarke’s resistance came to an end when he fell to Angelo Mathews for 57, which came off 88 balls and including four boundaries.
A crucial 32-run stand for the ninth wicket between Clint McKay and Mitchell Starc helped Australia reached 231.
Brief Scores: Australia 231 all-out in 49.1 overs (Michael Clarke 57, David Warner 34, Daniel Christian 33; Angelo Mathews 2 for 37, Nuwan Kulasekara 2 for 39) vs Sri Lanka.
