David Hussey s gritty half-century pushed Australia to 158 against Sri Lanka in their rain-truncated seventh One-Day International at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday.

Stand-in Australia skipper Ricky Ponting s decision to bat first backfired as his side struggled against Sri Lankan bowlers and failed to put up big partnerships.

Lasith Malinga rocked the hosts early when he had explosive David Warner caught by Farveez Maharoof for 13.

Ponting failed with the bat when he gave a return catch to Maharoof for two, as the Sri Lankan seamer bagged another wicket in form of Matthew Wade to leave Australia struggling.

Peter Forrest, who impressed with a fine half-century against India in his side s last game in the tri-series, lasted for only 26 balls and scoring 16 with the help of three boundaries.

Michael Hussey flopped with the bat scoring 13 off 23 balls.

David, who hit six boundaries during his knock of 58 off 64 balls, put up a crucial 49-run stand with Mitchell Starc.

Brief Scores: Australia 158 all-out in 40.5 overs (David Hussey 58; Farveez Maharoof 2 for 18, Thisara Perera 2 for 29) vs Sri Lanka.
