Can England script a turnaround after the Ben Stokes controversy? For England’s camp, the incident was certainly not completely palatable, but there was no denying Australia asserted their supremacy in that match, at Lord’s, and the previous one, at Rose Bowl. Welcome to CricketCountry’s coverage of the third ODI between England and Australia in Manchester. In the venue exactly a couple of years ago, Australia won an eventually one-sided contest against the hosts by 88 runs. Three big players of that game are out of cricket now — Michael Clarke, who scored a century in the match, Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott. Aaron Finch, the top-order batsman for Australia, who had participated in that match, makes a return to international cricket after months of layoff due to injury, in the upcoming game. Will Australia clinch the series at the earliest, making a statement after the Ashes loss, or will England get a win? LIVE CRICKET SCORECARD: England vs Australia, 3rd ODI, Manchester
Man of the Match: James Taylor: ‘Always nice to get three figures. The way the guys performed in must-win game was outstanding. Morgan played an exceptional knock for me to knock around at the other end. Nice to have the extra man in the 40 overs. I needed to kick on for the team, wanted to play the big shot but knew I couldn’t do that.’
Eoin Morgan: ‘Very impressed. We set a standard with the bat, set a good platform. Roy played his game. We lost a bit towards the end, could have got 20-30 runs. [The pitch]certainly played into our hands in the second innings. We want guys to make match-winning contributions, and James Taylor did that today. We tried to put the bowler under pressure, Jason Roy did that well. I thought spinners were outstanding. Finn’s spell up the top was impressive. We didn’t bowl too many bad balls in the first 10 overs. There were some outstanding catches. [Finn] was like a leaping salmon at midwicket.’
Steven Smith: ‘They got a few too many, but we dragged it back nicely in the end. The spinners did us in. We have to find ways to adapt in the middle overs. Ashton bowled nicely on debut. Maxwell’s come a long way with is spin bowling. When you’re chasing 300, you can’t get too behind the chase. Finch is a quality player and it’s goo to have him in the squad.’
England finally put together a complete performance to get the better of their opponents. A batsman had stick around fo the majority of the innings to shepherd the innings, and that batsman arrived in the form of James Taylor, who scored a smartly compiled ODI century, his first. Legspinner Rashid tested Australia’s batsmen, and Moeen Ali combined with him to strangle Australia in the middle overs in the chase. Ali’s 3 for 32 was his best ODI bowling figures. Two of those wickets were of the potent middle-order batsmen, George Bailey and Glenn Maxwell, who could have steered their team closer to the target had they not been nipped in the bud. Live Cricket Score Australia 207 | Overs 44 (Target 301): Pat Cummins, the No. 10, is the latest to get out. He hit Plunkett straight to long-on. The next ball is smashed through the covers by an urgent and attacking Wade. Wade has hit another four, a swipe through fine leg. Runs have been scampered by both batsmen, as Pattinson also joins in the endeavour. Wade, off Finn, is on a hitting spree, with smashes to midwicket and extra cove, and then he steps down the track to the bowler and is bowled!Batting: Wade 38 (39), Pattinson 1 (1)
Live Cricket Score Australia 168/8 | Overs 39 (Target 301): Only a few singles have been worked so far, as the noose seems to be tightening on the Australians. Agar turns a ball to leg and the batsmen decide to take the single. If the throw from short midwicket had hit, Wade would have been out. Agar goes down the track and tries to smash Plunkett out of the ground on the leg side, the ball travels very high to deep midwicket. Jason Roy settles under it, misjudges it a bit as the ball is behind him when it comes down on his hands, his jump helps him take the catch on the second grab! A delighted Roy acknowledges the crowd in a gentle, warm way. And ow Ali ensnares a third victim to finish with 3 for 32 in 10 overs. The last wicket was a spinning delivery that caught the edge of Mitchell Starc. Batting: Wade 11 (23), Cummins 1 (1)
OUT! Ashton Agar c Roy b Plunkett 5 (15)
OUT! Mitchell Starc c Bairstow b Ali 1 (4)
Live Cricket Score Australia 156/6 | Overs 35 (Target 301): Marsh and Wade try to play cautiously, and struggle to get the scoreboard moving. After two singles off two overs, one of which was a maiden, the batsmen start to milk the bowling in Rashid’s final over, which include three wides. After another over of Ali, safely negotiated, Morgan brings back Plunkett, who strikes with his final ball of the over. A short of a length delivery is worked off Marsh’s hips straight to short midwicket’s lap! The wheels are falling apart for Australia. Batting: Wade 6 (14), Agar 1 (5)
OUT! Mitchell Marsh c Woakes b Plunkett 13 (26)
Live Cricket Score Australia 141/5 | Overs 29 (Target 301): Maxwell looks to attack in his inimitable way. He hits a four through mid-off off Rashid, and then targets Moeen Ali. He reverse-sweeps Ali expertly to backward of point for a boundary, and then repeats the shot, to place the ball a little less square. But in trying the shot the third time in three balls, he top edges to the wicketkeeper, and is given out! Marsh, the new man, plays a few balls, turns a ball to square leg for a boundary, and then is rapped on the pads on his back foot by Rashid! He is also given out! But there is a twist! It seemed to be plumb in front of the stumps, but the hawk-eye showed the ball to be missing the stumps by a millimetre. Marsh’s review was successful. But Bailey goes instead! He hits Ali to straight to deep midwicket’s throat. Batting: Marsh 8 (8)
OUT! Glenn Maxwell c Bairstow b Ali 17 (12)
OUT! George Bailey c Stokes b Ali 25 (42)
Live Cricket Score Australia 110/3 | Overs 25 (Target 301): Rashid gets drift and sharp turn in the over he bowls to Bailey and Maxwell. Bailey was beaten by a legspinning fizzer, and Maxwell couldn’t get under an attempted sweep. Bailey has attempted to come down the wicket to play the spinners, especially Moeen Ali, well. Maxwell gets a reverse-sweep, but couldn’t get past the point fielder. Batting: Bailey 19 (34), Maxwell 0 (5)
Live Cricket Score Australia 107/3 | Overs 22 (Target 301): Finch reaches fifty with a chip to the leg side after having been fooled by the googly of Adil Rashid. He had, in the earlier over, smashed a drive to mid-off for a boundary to move to 48. Finch and Bailey have been picking singles off the two spinners, Rashid and Ali. Finch tries to slog another ball out of the ground, but mistimes another googly to the hands of long-on running in. Batting: Bailey 17 (21)
OUT! Aaron Finch c Woakes b Rashid 53 (60)
Live Cricket Score Australia 86/2 | Overs 18 (Target 301): WHATTA classic catch from Steven Finn! Rashid’s second over has Smith chipping a catch to short midwicket, and the tall bowler stretched to his right to pull off a remarkable catch! Smith departs to boos from the crowd. Finch is going smoothly at the other end, with another four, via mid-off. Bailey is the new man. Batting: Finch 43 (47), Bailey 6 (9)
OUT! Steven Smith c Finn b Rashid 25 (33)
Live Cricket Score Australia 69/1 | Overs 13 (Target 301): Finch drives down the ground with authority to collect a four. Smith, in the next over, tries to work a short-of-a-length ball to the leg side, but gets an inside edge past the wicketkeeper to get a boundary. Batting: Finch 35 (37), Smith 22 (23)
Live Cricket Score Australia 53/1 | Overs 10 (Target 301): Finn bowls a maiden over, all short of a length deliveries to Finch. A slower ball goes down the leg side, but the umpire doesn’t give it a wide, much to the puzzlement of Finch. Liam Plunkett comes on to bowl, and Finch drives past the bowler for a four down the ground. Finch could have been run out off the final delivery of the 10th over, but Taylor had to have a direct hit from point. Batting: Finch 30 (31), Smith 10 (11)
Live Cricket Score Australia 37/1 | Overs 7 (Target 301): Finch executes another of his typical lofted drives down the ground and in the next over, he played a short-arm pull to square leg for two fours. Off an overpitched, full ball he smashes Woakes for another boundary through long-off. Burns, looking to play to the on side, gets a leading edge that carries to the man at mid-off. The extra-cover fielder was heading for the catch as well, and the two fielders nearly collided, but care was taken to avoid any mishap at the last moment. Smith gets booed as he cuts to get this first boundary. Batting: Finch 22 (19), Smith 4 (5)
OUT! Joe Burns c Morgan b Finn 9 (18)
Live Cricket Score Australia 17/0 | Overs 4 (Target 301): No boundaries have been scored in the chase so far, and both batsmen have either blocked or pushed deliveries to fielders in the ring. Out of nowhere, Aaron Finch smoothly lofts down the ground for a one-bounce four. There are five runs via overthrows in the middle as well. Batting: Burns 5 (12), Finch 10 (12)
James Taylor was lively and smart with his innings, as he has been in the first two ODIs, but unlike in those matches, he ‘reigned myself in’ despite his itch to go after the bowling at certain junctures. His running between the wickets is exemplary: his quickness allows singles to be converted to twos, and twos to threes. He has the big shots, the examples of which were present in today’s knock. It was a complete innings. The only thing he could have done better is accelerate more effectively in the death overs, but that doesn’t detract from the great value of his effort, his maiden ODI century, that helped England avoid a middle-order collapse and take them to 300. Eoin Morgan and especially Jason Roy looked good when they were in the middle, but both threw their wickets away. Roy looked impenetrable in the initial phase of England’s innings. His opening partner, Hales, contributed 9 off 31 balls but England were still cruising, largely due to the dashing of Roy. Australia will need to bat well to topple the score. Live Cricket Score England 300/8 | Overs 50: Taylor, on 99, drives down the ground, but the ball ricochets off the non-striker Woakes’ bat, and Taylor scampers through and dives headlong into the stumps in the urgency to get to the other end before a run-out was made, to score his maiden ODI century. But soon after, Taylor gives room to get under a ball to pull it belligerently, but could not time the shot well, only sending it to deep mid-off where Ashton Agar takes a good catch. A six is hit off a perfect length ball to get under, from Woakes, and it helped England reach exactly 300. Not Out: Woakes 14 (11), Rashid 1 (1)
Live Cricket Score England 285/7 | Overs 48: Bairstow gets hold of a short ball from Starc and deposits him over deep midwicket for a six! But afull ball follows, and he is unable to get it away. Off the first ball of the next over, Moeen Ali tries to play a pull off Cummins, but gets a top edge to the mid-on fielder. After Taylor gets another four through fine leg, Plunkett set off for a run when Taylor smashed a ball straight to the midwicket inside the circle, and Plunkett is run out. Woakes, the new man, works a ball to leg and scampers for a two, and then takes a single. Taylor, on 99, attempts to drive past cover, but fails to evade the fielder in two out of two attempts. England win toss and bat. The only change for England is the inclusion of Jonny Bairstow in place of the rested Jos Buttler. For Australia, Aaron Finch, Ashton Agar, and James Pattinson come in for the injured David Warner, Shane Watson and Nathan Coulter-Nile.
Eoin Morgan agrees that there could be a need to bring in left-arm seamers into the mix, but refrains from making changes to the current side.
Besides Finch, left-arm spinner Ashton Agar and James Pattinson may get to play their first games for their side this series. England are also likely to make changes: the rested Jos Buttler will make way for Jonny Bairstow, and left-arm seamer David Willey may replace one of the right-arm quicks.
