India reached score of 125 runs for the loss of two wickets at the end of 25 overs in the fourth One-Day International (ODI) at Adelaide Oval.
Gautam Gambhir is unbeaten on 66 runs at halfway of the Indian run-chase with Rohit Sharma joining him at the crease.
Chasing a total of 270 runs, India earlier lost Virender Sehwag (20) after a solid opening partnership between him and Gambhir for 20 runs.
India were asked to bowl first at Adelaide as Australian captain Michael Clarke won the toss and elected to bat first on batting-friendly track.
With a win against the winless Sri Lankans, India are second in the points table. The unbeaten Australians are top of the heap after two successive wins.
Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar has been rested in the fourth ODI as Gautam Gambhir got an opportunity to open the innings with Virender Sehwag.
Brief Score: Australia 269 for 8 in 50 overs (David Hussey 72, Peter Forrest 66, Daniel Christian 39; Umesh Yadav 2 for 49, R Vinay Kumar 2 for 58, Zaheer Khan 1 for 46) vs India 125 for 2 (Gautam Gambhir 66*, Virender Sehwag 20, Rohit Sharma 12*; Clint McKay 2 for 12)
