Cheteshwar Pujara scored a fluent 159 and MS Dhoni slammed 73, as India were bundled out for 438 against New Zealand moments before tea on the second day of opening Test in Hyderabad.

 

India lost Pujara in the second session, whose marathon innings of 159 ended when he decided to go arial, but mistiming a shot off New Zealand spinner Patel and caught by James Franklin.

 

Pujara faced 306 balls during his stay, and cracked 19 boundaries and a six.

 

He added 127 runs for the sixth wicket with Indian captain MS Dhoni, who scored 73.

 

The Indian skipper’s resistance ended in a similar manner, falling to Patel for 73. Dhoni’s knock of 73 came off 147 balls, studded with six hits to the fence and one over the ropes.

 

Earlier at lunch, Pujara touched 150, while Dhoni notched up a half-century as India continued to dominate against New Zealand, piling up 371 for five in their first innings.

 

The hosts, playing their first match after the retirement of veterans Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, kept going strong with Pujara carrying on from where he left yesterday.

 

The youngster was unbeaten on 151 (282 balls, 18×4, 1×6) at the break.

 

Dhoni gave fine support at the other end, completing his 25th Test half-century to be not out on 61 from 107 balls (5×4, 1×6).
