Pakistan bowlers fought back on Day three after Mahela Jayawardene and Kushal Perera frustrated the attack earlier. After restricting the Island Nation to 388, spearheaded by comeback man Nuwan Pradeeep, Sri Lankan bowlers struck early blows to send Pakistan reeling at 19 for three.
However, the former and current captain, Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq got together and with their experience posted fluent unbeaten half centuries.
With two full days play left and a lead of 91 runs, Sri Lanka still hold all the aces in the Test and Pakistan would need a monumental effort with the bat from the unbeaten duo and lower order to avoid going 0-1 down in the three match Test series.
Brief scores:
Pakistan 165 (Khurram Manzoor 73; Nuwan Pradeep 3 for 62, Rangana Herath 3 for 26) and 132 for 3 (Younis Khan 62*, Misbah-ul Haq 53*; Nuwan Pradeep 2 for 28) trail Sri Lanka 388 ( Kaushal Silva 95, Mahela Jayawardene 129, Angelo Mathews 42; Junaid Khan three for 102) by 91 runs.
